You just but shadows with a darker shade of the colour you are drawing the shadow on.

Just a new layer using the pencil tool, colour white, and turning down the opacity.

I made two new layers (Shadows, Highlights) Then using the pen tool drew the shadows with black and highlights with white, then I changed the opacity to around 40-60.
