i've managed to keep at it throught school. If your lucky and your alliance looks after you, you can get pretty powerfull only going on once a day

I had a couple of slaughters, bigger alliances deciding to take over the smaller ones I'm in, after the second one I had had enough. My first city got to over 7000 points before they came and destroyed us.

i was very lucky and managed to get into a big alliance. We were number 1 in Gamma until comeone hacked the game and disbanded the alliance. I'm in a smaller alliance now only 16 but is fun being cocky to the bigger players because I don't care if my cities are conquered.

I've always preferred smaller alliances, no more than about 100, because it feels more personal, and more like you actually matter.
