They may be called "Off-colors" but I wanted to make this drawing as colorful, bright, and cheery as I could. I even included Lars because after what went down in "Wanted" there was no way I was NOT gonna have Lars in here. Anyways let's talk about what happened. * Spoiler Warning* for those that haven't seen the latest episodes of Steven Universe. Still here? Cool! First of all, WOW I cannot believe that Lars died- even for a moment! My first time watching this I simply thought he was knocked out until the show made it evident enough for me to pick up on what happened. I've never really been too fond of Lars. The show always depicted him as a mild antagonistic character who is more often than not- an A-hole to Steven. No matter what Steven did for Lars, he would always retain his grouchy and cynical demeanor. An attitude like that in an otherwise happy-go-lucky world really made Lars stand out and not in a good way. Fast-forward to the current arc and you'll see Lars slowly changing: His insecurities about his cooking, his regret over abandoning Sadie to save himself, his trust in Steven to his sacrifice! This is truly Lars at his best. Oh and also he's pink now and seems to have similar abilities to Steven's Lion. It's a bit uncharacteristic but with this new transformation in mind I wanted to draw Lars cracking a big ol' confident Steven grin! Suddenly Lars is kinda cool now.

I know most of us are eager to have Lars back on Earth safe and sound but honestly I wouldn't mind if he stayed a little longer on the Gems' Homeworld so he can bond with his new family- the Off-color Gems. It would be very interesting to see what Lars is capable of now and what sort of adventures he could have with these new Gems. It's a perfect opportunity to continue developing his now-redeemed character. As for the off-color gems themselves I really love the eclectic designs that show their imperfections but also embrace them. Seeing these wayward Gems bond really makes me wish they starred in an animated feature film where they go on a quest of self-discovery and friendship kind of like those old Don Bleuth films. I can't be the only one that gets this vibe, right? Anyway I felt the best way to show these new Gems would be to have them bonding like a big happy family. I think it really suits them wonderfully, don't you?
