Gotta say, it's not that easy to draw 8-bit Mario...

Well, I look at the 8-bit Mario sprite and then just draw straight lines with a ruler for his face and body. I did the coloring with Crayola colored pencils.
You can easily tell where everything is located because all video game sprites are made of different colored pixel squares.

Yeah, those were the days.
I actually have all Nintendo consoles(NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, and Wii) and many handhelds(GB, GB Pocket, GB Color, GB Advance, GBA SP, DS, GB Micro, DS Lite, DSi, and 3DS).
I don't have a Virtual Boy though.

Well, this is actually Mario's 26th anniversary in Japan, but it was 24th in the US last year, so he's been here for 25 years. Yay! Very well done drawing.
