Description Another poster of the fusions between my OCs and kaijus.

Now, this time, we're going with the only installment of the TriStar Era. This one was Godzilla, the 1998 film directed by Roland Emmerich.

1998: Several things happened this year: Google makes its debut on Internet; the Chilean Fascist ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet is arrested in London (he deserved to being shot there...); the Luna Prospector spacecraft is sent to the orbit of the Moon; are held the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano (Japan); Russia behins to circulate new Rubles to stem inflation and promote confidence; it's inaugurated the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge; celebrities like Octavio Paz (mexican writter), Phil Hartman (the voice of Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure in The Simpsons), and Akira Kurosawa (the master of Japanese cinema) died; its held the World Cup in France, being the host country the winner; Britney Spears presents Hit Me Baby One More Time, while Ricky Martin presents The Cup Of Life; series like True Life, Dawson's Creek, Power Rangers In Space, CatDog, Celebrity Deathmatch, Sex And The City, Oh Yeah! Cartoons (where The Fairly OddParents, ChalkZone, and My Life As A Teenager Robot will make their pre-debuts), Pokémon (in American TV), The PowerPuff Girls, Card Captor Sakura, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Seijuu Sentai Gingaman (later known as Power Rangers Lost Galaxy), Ultraman Gaia, and Yu-Gi-Oh! made their debuts on TV; we meet videogames like Marvel VS Capcom: Clash Of Superheroes, Resident Evil 2, Yoshi's Story, Banjo-Kazooie, F-ZERO X, Mega Man Legends, Metal Gear Solid, Spyro The Dragon, Grim Fandango, The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Dance Dance Revolution, Mario Party, and Sonic Adventure made their debuts; and we meet films like Armageddon, Saving Private Ryan, A Bug's Life, Mulan, Dr. Dolittle, Darren Aronofsky's Pi, Small Soldiers, Blade, Antz, Bride Of Chucky, The Big Lebowski, There's Something ABout Mary, American History X, The Truman Show, The Rugrats Movie, The Prince Of Egypt, and Mighty Joe Young. However, in this year, TriStar tried to make an attempt for reimaginating the original Godzilla 1954 film. The result: a film which's amusingly poor, but it's a sin of calling Godzilla...

This is the story:
Following a nuclear test in French Polynesia back between the 1940s and 1950s, the fallout irradiates a lizard's nest. Decades later, an enormous sea creature suddenly attacks a Japanese fishing vessel in the South Pacific, leaving only one fisherman alive. Dr. Niko "Nick" Tatopoulos, an NRC biologist, is sent to Panama and Jamaica, where a wrecked village, footprints, and ship are found. Nick collects skin samples that lead him to believe the creature is an enormous mutant created by nuclear testing. It travels to New York City during the rainiest week of the season, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

The city is evacuated before the military attempts to kill it but fails in an initial attempt. Nick later collects a blood sample, and after performing a pregnancy test, discovers that the creature reproduces asexually and is collecting food for its offspring. Aspiring journalist and ex-girlfriend of Nick's, Audrey Timmonds, uncovers a tape in his possession containing classified information about the creature. However, her superior, Charles Caiman, appropriates the tape as his own and broadcasts it on television, revealing the creature's nuclear origins in French Polynesia and its name, spoken by the surviving fisherman as "Gojira", which Caiman jumbles up as "Godzilla". With the classified information now released, Nick is removed from the operation, and abandons Audrey. Soon, he is kidnapped by Philippe Roaché, an "insurance guy" he met before coming to Manhattan. Revealing himself as an agent of the French secret service, Philippe and his colleagues have been keeping close watch on the events and plan to cover up their country's role in the nuclear testing that spawned Godzilla. Suspecting a nest somewhere in the city, they cooperate with Nick to trace and destroy it.

Following a second military attempt to kill Godzilla, the creature dives into the Hudson River to escape. Attacked by US Navy submarines, including USS Utah (SSBN-745), it sinks to the river bed, presumably killed. Meanwhile, Nick and Philippe's strike team, followed by Audrey and her cameraman Victor "Animal" Palotti, find the nest inside Madison Square Garden and locate over 200 eggs. Before the French can succeed in destroying them, the eggs suddenly hatch and the offspring attack the strike team, killing most of them. Nick, Animal, Audrey and Philippe take refuge in the Garden's broadcast booth and send out a live news-report to alert the military of what will happen if the offspring escape. A prompt response involving an airstrike is initiated as the four escape moments before Air Force jets bomb the arena. Audrey and Nick reunite, before the adult Godzilla, however, having survived, emerges from the Garden's ruins. It chases the four across Manhattan, believing them responsible for the deaths of its young. After a taxi chase, they manage to trap Godzilla within the Brooklyn Bridge where the returning Air Force jets manage to shoot it down. Godzilla dies from its wounds, while the remaining citizens celebrate. Audrey tells Caiman that she quits working for him after what he did, before leaving with Nick. Philippe (taking a tape that Animal was recording and promising to return it after "removing a few items from it") thanks Nick for his help and parts ways.

Meanwhile, back at the ruins of Madison Square Garden, a single surviving egg hatches.

What can I say about this movie? As I said you, it's a sin for being named as Godzilla...The story, for starter, isn't a metaphore to the atomic bomb like the original story by Inoshiro Honda, to the point of lacking of suspense, and with an uninvincible monster who neither ressembles Godzilla; aside, the characters are very idiotic and overacted, to the point of being somewhat similar to the typical American cliches and stereotypes, and later, I think the idea of involving Godzilla's offsprings, I think it was like extracted from Jurassic Park (1993), but with a touch of Independence Day (1998). It's not surprise why the fans disliked this film, to the point of cancelling the proposed sequels (whose ideas will be later used in an animated series (which was much better)), and forcing Toho putting active the productions of films (with Godzilla 2000: Millenium (1999)), and, about a decent American Godzilla movie, there'll not be one, until 2014, thanks to Garrett Edwards (which'll have sequels (the 2nd involving King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan; and the 3rd one involving King Kong!). And, about the monster, curiously, will be brought by Toho, and named as Zilla, being first referenced in "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack!" (2001; directed by Shusuke Kaneko) as a monster which attacked New York in 1998, and was confused by the American Government as Godzilla, altought Japanese Government negates this. Later, this monster will be controlled by the Xiliens, for lating fighting Godzilla at Sydney in Godzilla: Final Wars (2004; directed by Ryuhei Kitamura). Today, this monster has some aceptation in the fandom. ABout the SFX and the music, they aren't bad (the OST includes a cover of We Can Be Heroes (originally performed by David Bowie (R.I.P.)) by The Wallflowers).
Well, as an attempt of reimaginating the iconical King Of The Monsters, they screwed it...However, by another side, I found it somewhat good, despite their idiotic characters (at least the 3 main ones will be better in the animated series...) and not-so-invincible monster (altought the OST and songs aren't bad); so, this movie is So-Bad, But-So-Good (altought not at the same level of Godzilla VS Megalon (1973)), but much better than Godzilla, Minilla, Gabara: All Monsters Attack! (1969; why, Inoshiro Honda? Why?)). Whatever, frankly, I reccommend it to you for passing a rainy afternoon with your friends, no matter if you don't expect too much; altoguht, frankly, I prefer more Emmerich's Godzilla than Dragon Ball Evolution...!
