As a drawing it is extraordinary, as a photograph it is exceptional. The difference between this and the rest of your gallery cause us to disbelieve.. it is just too perfectΒ ...and yet if real - your technique is exquisite.Β
However, as you yourself imply on 11th October - is such a sublime copy of a photograph in a different media 'art' or 'draughting' ?Β Different people clearly have different opinion.Β
In my own view - the same drawing would be a thousand times better if it had been from life (a live sitting) - where you not only have to capture the exact proportion and all those details, but then crucially - also create every aspect of the ambiance.Β Few then would argue that it would have been a masterpiece ...in the true sense of the word.Β Can you do that ?
Like most, I myself fall into the latter category with my drawings and paintings.. I am a draughtsman. That is - I also used to be pretty good technically, but I lacked the creativity (the underlying purpose or expression) of an artist.!Β In due course I gave up drawing & painting because (to me) there was actually no purpose to it. It was simply a very long-handed way to reproduce someone else's photo.Β Many, many years later I feel the creativity stirring (I now have things to say and a wish to express) but through lack of practice have long lost the technique.!
And so, I urge you to continue to develop that technique ..in life drawing and through adding to your palette & medium (even the greatest artists practice, experiment & in doing so - continue to grow), while at the same time finding something that you want to say or express (your love for a person, or anger at an injustice) and present it as a pictorial composition.Β If you can then apply your incredible technique to that - you will have stepped over.. Your drawings will be Art, and your every stroke of the brush or charcoal will be poetry with symphonic backing !Β Β
Believe me.. Mankind really does needs art, perhaps more now ..than any time throughout its history.
Sincere best regards, P.

Hi, cheers! You are exactly right. This drawing is quite old now, and was nothing more than a technical exercise. Useful, but no purpose beyond learning a technique you set out to do. Detail is certainly not the benchmark for determining if a drawing or painting is good or not. And you are spot on, there is no substitute to drawing from life - I'll only ever refer to a photograph if there really was no other choice! But I think it is sad to see that craft is often considered secondary to artistic expression. It shouldn't be!If they are mutual, then they will both fully compliment each other.
Thanks for your comment

brilliant turn out the skin texture must have been mind numbing but you've captured every detail. Love it

Hi everyone. Sorry I'm not on DA much and just caught up with comments. Thanks very much for all your kind messages! It's a bit humbling, I'm not really sure that they are justified though, I think you're all just being nice
I've seen a few comments saying there are photographic qualities. This is a bit amusing because I don't see that at all, and it was never my intention, I was just experimenting by going into a bit of detail.
Personally I prefer drawings to look like drawings, paintings to look like paintings and photographs to look like photographs. Not to give the illusion that it is something that it is not. So perhaps in that respect I failed a little bit
So feel free to throw some criticism out there too, I'm keen as to learn!
But thank you everybody! And have a nice day!

Hi, thanks! But it's nothing special, approach was the same as any drawing, I just aimed on getting the shapes, proportions and values right, and then just worked into it. The texture was a bit of an experiment - just many layers of lots of small marks following the contour of the features. cheers!
