i looked up into the grey sky
and see a thousand eyes staring back
and all around these golden beacons
i see nothing but black

More of a simple analogy to the song with the golden colour standing out from the dark black and white a direct referral to the name of this song and its lyrics in the chorus.
The "thousand eyes staring back" could be the leaves being seen as "golden beacons" amongst the black.
