Description
Here is the illustration that resulted from my latest YouTube video, "Time Lapse Drawing: Realism Challenge-- Mushroom." In the video you can see clips from every step in the illustration process, from first pencils to finishing touches:[link]
I've taken the unusual step of including a ruler here, since my decision to do the drawing at the exact size of the real mushroom made for a very small working area: Good practice for pushing one's control of the drawing and coloring media to the limit.
Some commenters said they wished I'd put more time into it so as to get a more realistic final result. I think they're right, and next time I undertake such a project I will strive to do better.

This is fantastic and way better than I could've done but I don't think you quite went far enough wit the dark shades on the left half of the mushroom. But other than that, it's amazing.

Am I the only one who isn't all that impressed?
Mark, this mushroom is perfect. Thanks for the mushroom and all... but a lot of people, with some training, can draw a perfect mushroom.
What most people cannot do is bring to life new, amazing worlds, tell fascinating stories, create enduring characters... and that is what you do! That's what I admire about you.
So sorry if watching you draw a mushroom seems anti-climatic. It's like having Martin Scorsese direct a Sham-Wow commercial. It's like calling the Incredible Hulk to open a salsa jar. It's like having Frank Lloyd Wright make a birdhouse. It's like having Jackie Chan teach you to thumb-wrestle. Get my drift? ;D
Cheers!

I understand what you are saying but not any one with training can draw a perfect mushroom. Some people may study on a year on just how to draw a mushroom and might be able to draw like this but don't forget mark didn't just learn how to draw this. This is pure skills to put what you learn into a test.

Yeah, he explained he does this to help people learn the process.
My comment was more to the point that his wrinkle paper, realistic eye and the mushroom get so much attention and admiration, when in my view they are far less impressive than his amazing creative work.
So yea, not less impressed with him, as much as how people seem to value photo-realism over creativity and originality, which are much harder to accomplish.

i understand what you are saying but still, most people who watch him are not professional so they would be impressed (for example i think that is impressive ).
Also i agree with you saying that creativity and originality is more impressive then photo-realism but most artist start of with photo realism and then advance on. This could be a lesson to all those who are starting to become an artist.
Something off topic here. How much artist do you believe have pure talent and then build up on it? Also How much artist do you believe just started from scratch and just got experiences? It is an question that has been bugging me for a while now.

Most people have more talent than they realize.
For example, just the fact that you like drawing means you have a measure of natural talent. If not, you would find it boring or not interesting at all.
No matter how much talent you have, a little or a lot, you need a good teacher to help you develop it and become good at art. And of course, you need to be dedicated. Talent helps, but hard work, discipline and dedication to a good learning program are far more important.
The ones with a lot of talent who never get training or work hard, never go beyond mediocre.
If you look at the very best of the best artists, you realize that 99% of them will attribute their success to hard work and constant learning, rather than talent.
I hope that somewhat answers your question.
Cheers!

Isn't that the whole point of Mark's how to draw videos on YouTube though? To help train those who don't know how to make perfectly realistic looking drawings (the techniques he used may well apply to other things as well.. not just mushrooms) so that they can do so with practice at some point?
...I understand where you're coming from about the storytelling aspect but, again, I don't really think that's the purpose of his how to draw videos. As I see it, what he's trying to do is help others develop their own abilities in drawing more than anything else. I find it very heartwarming to see that, despite his masterful abilities and talent, he still takes the time for those of us who would otherwise continue to struggle developing our own abilities... I am extremely grateful to mark for that :')
Always,

The video is not about impressing people; it's about revealing the process of how such illustrations are created: How the various layers are built up to achieve the final result. You may already know these things, but not everyone does, so I feel it is worth doing a video like this every once in a while.
Thanks for your compliments-- you're very kind to compare me in any way to such masters. :')

Good point! I just see so much praise piled upon this picture, the realistic eye and the crumpled paper, compared to real creative works of yours, it makes me wonder if people realize how difficult it is to put something new into the world.
But I guess you are right, the basics are the first step in that process, after all.

You are one of my all time favourite people who I subscribed to and I'm often happy when you upload something new. You're even part of the reason i now still hold a pencil and try to match your skill(and fail miserably).
I really think that you are a very talented man and I really wish i had your skill. Anyone who says this isn't good enough is dead wrong!!
