I haven't seen Mastering Manga yet, but one thing I always have trouble with is laying out panels. Another idea would be how to draw action poses and action sequences. Perhaps you covered these things in the first book....

Things I think should go in a how to draw manga book:
Different poses of sitting, laying down, walking, etc.
ANIMALS~ :3
different clothing styles - fabric and the way they fold
backgrounds:
- forests
- beach
- city
- small town
- night time
- dawn/morning
How about drawing stuff like computers, cell phones, beds, lamps, etc?

How to make it look like the picture has life, like say if a character was running or jumping - how could you make it look like it was moving? A mixture of both advance and beginnings would be best. How to draw hands and feet? That always seems to get us all. How to position them on the character so they don't look completely awkward is another one. How to draw people at different ages - baby, kid, preteen, teen, adult, Grandparent? How to draw clothes, hats, watches, shoes, gloves, hair clips, ect. How to draw two, or more, people with proper proportion in the same picture? Plus the usual, how to draw faces, eyes, noses, mouths, bodies, ears, hair, ect. The basics that we all need. How to draw people with objects - umbrellas, alarm clocks, books, bags, water bottles, fans, maybe a sword and some ninja stars for us anime fans. Animals is a good one too. I can never get animals right. Dogs, cats, snakes, birds, turtles, kangeroos, fish, deer, any other animal. And how their proportions would relate to other animals & people. Plants are also good. Flowers, trees, grass, clouds, mud. That's all I've got for the moment. I'll comment again if I come up with anything else.

My "Mastering MANGA"-book just came in today; I've read it once already and I love it with a passion!

I'd like you to follow up on the whole "creating your own character"-thing a little more in the next book, seeing as it was the main concern of this one. Like character-development or how to base your storyline (plot) around the character, maybe? Or how to create side-characters? I know you already covered the basics (pretty thoroughly too) so this is not a main concern, I suppose.

I suppose what I'd want the most in your next book would be shading, coloring, drawing some more body-types (like ultra-thin or pumped, muscular, etc. not a main concern) and maybe you could say a few words about your own preferences on the matter:

Do you write the story first and then draw the character, or do you write your story around a character you've drawn?
Do you get inspiration from other manga/anime, real life, books and movies, TV/computer, etc.?

And, idk, other people might have better suggestions on the whole "what to draw"-thing.
Who knows, maybe some more about clothes? I'd like that too. And maybe about posing, but more like posing a character around a room, interacting with stuff while posing?

I love your book wholeheartedly and it contains pretty much everything I've always wanted.
You're the master, Crilley! This book is my bible. Thank you~! (Off to read it again and practice.)

But geez, I don't really know what to say. You've covered pretty much everything in this one book!

Oh, wait, how to vary in facial shapes! Noses, eyes, chins and cheeks, mouths, forehead! Stuff like that. So my characters won't all look like clones with different hair types XD

One thing that would be useful would be suggestions or ideas on how to draw a character interacting with the location they're in. Something like leaning on an object and how to show the object bending slightly in a believable way.
I'm not sure if it's in this one since I havn't ordered it yet (a bit short on funds at the moment)

I think drawing faces from unusual angles would be cool, like a head looking up or down. Manga tutorials usually only focus on how the face looks when moved horizontally and not vertically. Also, drawing short hair for males. It may be less manga-like, but a page on less dramatic and spiky hair for guys would be nice. I can't wait to get the Mastering Manga book, and I hope you do get to make another one.

i haven't ordered your book but i'm going to order it soon. i think, you should make a section on how to draw robots, fantasy creatures, animals, pirates, cowboys etc.

p.s: because i'm drawing pokemon, i believe a "how to draw fantasy creatures/animals in anime style" section, would be really helpfull....

I didn't get to see the first book so I'm not sure if it's covered up or not, if not would you consider making a section for fighting positions and weapons?

I haven't had a chance to buy the book yet, I have seen your preview videos.

My main problem is now how to shade but rather where to shade. I would really like to have a book that shows me where to put the shading at different angles of light and how to determine which angle of light would be best for different synarios.

also I would like something that explains how to do it in the computer, with photoshop or any of those programs, but I think that is for a more advance book haha

There are a lot of coloring/drawing tutorials around on both deviantART and the internet in general. A lot of image manipulation programs, like Photoshop, Paint Tool SAI, and GIMP have the same basic tools, so say, something written for drawing in the GIMP could also be applied to Photoshop.
C: If it helps you any. All you have to know is what you're searching for.

ill get mine in a few weeks too so i dont know whats in it yet but one thing id like to see that most how to books dont do is more angles most of the time there will be a person in one or two angles but thats it. it would be nice to see a pose in every angle. also they do do much on hands a feet, that is a big problem area for me, i like seeing every possible angle or more poses like doing things or holding things. cant wait to get the first one! looking forward to the next as well!

You should explain how to draw in perspectives, such as from the top, side, bottom, etc.!!

Keep up the great work! We love you!

I know you said you're a non-super-violence kind of guy, but it would be great to learn guns and their corresponding poses. Could you possibly do a section on furries?

he did a How to Draw a Catgirl video on youtube, but I'm not sure that counts, since it was just a girl with cat ears and a tail that stuck out from under her skirt.

Well, I don't know if he's going to consider your suggestion then. It's like asking an Italian chef to make sushi. He'd have to take time to learn it before he could make a lesson about it, and it's not really his style anyway.

rei-95 [2012-02-24 14:06:06 +0000 UTC]

In my opinion you should explain perspective but not only how people or thing are located in a place, Im saying to explain how to draw a park with people in it and stores and that stuff, or a fight in the top of a building and the city as a background, also it would be perfect to explain how to draw animals, not many books do that!! Thanks for your help and efforts!!

It's still shipping to me, can't wait!

I've always wanted to learn how to draw really good action poses. Sprinting, fighting, leaping et cetera. These are especially hard from certain perspectives, when some parts are bigger and smaller. I think you'll have no problem giving some of those poses, tips on how to make other action poses, or effects/tricks to make scenes contain more drama, so that the adrenaline flows through you with every page. Keep drawing Mark, we in Holland here love you too!
