Hey Mark,
So I got the book and while I can say it definitely is good, it wasn't quite what I personally was looking for. Now don't get me wrong I use it all the time and it has some valuable lessons in it. Having said that, For all of your lessons in the book you tend to do situation specific explanations/demonstrations. For example pg 46, a very good lesson for that pose, but not for that body type in general. Which of course, pose specific lessons are a great way for a beginner to learn. But what about more complicated poses. I guess what I'm saying is it would be nice to see a book on technique, so "here is one method to draw x, and this is how you use said method to draw y". Like I said before not bashing the first one at all, great for reference and the like!

maybe you could do a few pages on how to make a story for your manga, or how to get an idea for what you want your manga to be like
for example; you could give us some pointers on how to use things in everyday life to come up with an idea for your manga storyline.

I Think that you should expand the paneling and page layouts section of the book, you could never get enough information on Paneling . I also think you should expand the Fighting portion of the book. There are a couple a fighting poses in it, but I think that in the next book you should cover more on planing a whole fighting manga page.

Your first book covered all the generals. I'd say for future books, that you should focus on one topic. Example "How to draw Shonen Characters with Mark Crilley" and everything in that book is All about and Only about Shonen characters from the eyes, nose, expressions, stance, hands, feet, positions, fights, battles, effects, style, head shapes, hair, body, weapons, backgrounds, tips, friends, foe, villains, heroes, the do's and don'ts for shonen, a 'wrong' and 'right' section on how to draw a specific thing, etc. The possibilities are endless and this is only covering shonen and that would be great because you are focusing on the whole shonen genre and putting it all in one "how to draw" book. I think that would be a hit, in fact I take that back, I know it would.
You could also do others such as Shonen, Shojou, chibi, realstic, animals, anatomy, figure drawing, portraits, water color, painting, objects, scenery, space, american style, etc. The options are endless, I hope this helped. Keep up the good work

i would absolutely love to see an expansion on how to draw the folds in clothes (like where they go, how much is too much etc.) a bit more on hair, i only got to see pictures... and the same with eyes. i don't believe that i saw anything having to do with drawing hands, feet, or ears - i have a whole heck of a lot of trouble drawing those. shading is another topic that i think should be touched on as well... 'cause i didn't see much of that in the first book either.... anyways, keep up the good work!

I would love to see the third view expanded!
Maybe full body 3/4, with guide lines. Also if it could be in 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 1/4, 0/4 ( basically a 180 degree view) all the same character, it could really help me and others understand how the character would look from all angles. I have a hard time of drawing the female/male body. I think this could help with proportions in all directions. Also above and below would also be great!
Thanks for your time!

I just received your book in the mail yesterday and there are some things I wish to point out. Overall the book looks good but there was something I wanted to point out. I was looking forward on learning how to draw manga hair. I did like how you listed manga hair styles but for me I think that you failed to show us how to actually draw the hair. Instead you just listed different styles. If you do make a second book I think you should focuses on one subject. So it would be something like Mastering Manga: Hair. This way it focuses on one thing and is right on key. I also really didnβt like how you set up some of the formats. Things like hair, hands, feet, etc were all set up in the category of you drawing a picture for us to see the different ways of modeling a figure. I didnβt like this because it made me feel like I was being forced to draw the pictures to match those certain keys. The book is good but overall needs some improvement. Keep doing what youβre doing though.

Oh gosh, I just don't ever get them right also maybe some tips on the anatomy differences in the female body and male body? And facial expression and angles from the face would also be lovely for both male and females cause I know how there is a difference in the bone structure usually on the jaws and cheeks. Thanks so much for taking your time in reading this and look forward to buying your next book as well!:3

make it a more "advanced" book packed to the BRIM with awesome references aswell. Covering a lot more poses and loads of references for those too, along with more proportions not for just standing up but sitting down, laying down, slouched etc..

Hey Mark, so I've had Mastering Manga for a month or so now and I've used it quite a bit and it's definitely helped me improve. The things I've used it most for are pose reference, hair reference, and proportions (of the face and body).
What I'd love to see in the next one:
-More pose references (including more sitting, lying down, with props (chair, bed, table, etc.) maybe!)
-More in depth post proportioning. One thing I've struggled with is figuring out the proportions of each part of the body in a given pose. So how long should the forearm elbow to wrist be, how long should the foot or hand be. How long should the knee to ankle be etc. etc.
-More in depth hair tutorials. Especially including curling hair (there are only 3 or 4 curly hair references and it's very hard to find various types of curl and in depth how to's for them)
-In depth shading tutorials (which explains lighting etc.)
-Maybe background tutorials or tips.
-Maybe tutorials on foreshortening and perspective/angle.
-Coloring tutorials! With various mediums (ink, paint, pencils etc.).

Well, after so long of studying your book and using it as reference for drawings, I think I have a good feel for it.
I think there's a lot of stuff that could just completely have it's own book. The main thing I'd like to see more of is how to draw poses, especially using guidelines. I've had to combine your method of drawing bodies built on top of a guideline technique that I found in another book, because otherwise, I would not be able to figure out how to get the pose that I wanted. So a book dedicated to drawing poses (fighting, running, walking, jogging, falling, up close and at a distance like what details will disappear as you get further away, etc.).
I really loved how you added children and "fuller-body" and "aged" characters into the book. I've been looking -everywhere- for such tutorials, and only your manga book seems to have them! Perhaps, though, in another manga book, you could add how to draw different face shapes. More full-body, diamond, circular, oval, rectangular, square, etc. Anything else that could make a character look more unique from other characters just via the face shape given to them.
Another thing I have noticed that no anime book seems to add is how to draw the manga face at angles other than the typical profile view, front view, and 3/4's view. I'd personally like to see some tilted up and 3/4's, tilted down and 3/4's, and things like that. I'm not sure other people have had this problem, but for a long time (and even still) I struggle drawing the face at more than one different angle at a time. I've experimented with front view looking up and so forth, but it's definitely a chore.
Then, perhaps you could offer tips for drawing people of different races? I know the facial features of an African American tend to be different from a Caucasian American. And ironically, though anime tends to be placed in Japan, all of the Japanese characters have the big, round "western eyes" instead of the type of eyes you'd typically see of an Asian. But even if the eye thing isn't possible, being able to draw characters of other races would be helpful to me.
All in all, I love the book. Instead of having to go to a dozen different tutorials I have stuffed in my Internet Faves, and looking up two dozen or so others, I've only looked at one internet tutorial, and two how-to-draw manga books, one of them being yours. The other was only to help me draw the body (though I'm still in that phase).
That's my two... or more... cents. Otherwise, I LOVE the book, and I look forward to more!
Also, my sister and I are hooked on Brody's Ghost. We can't wait more more!

I Am A Big Fan.
And i will re-comment once i think this threw more indepth. but for now i would say that its the best to have a mix of beginner and advanced.
also maybe different manga styles and how to create your own for example, 'Brody's Ghost' style is different from 'Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt' art style.
Maybe How To Create your own manga, mainly paneling and story and characters.
Also How to create Digital art with Paint Tool Sai (or photoshop since there very similar) for begginers with a tablet. (like me, i got my tablet a few weeks ago and im not very good with it)
Also Drawing more complex people poses.
maybe how to draw were-people (Anthros/Furries)
How to create your own well-rounded species(creature)/Character.
Other poses, Maybe even character-emotions (Chibi and normal)
Perspective, this is the hardest thing for me. and since my goal is to be a published artists with dark horse, i do want to be able to create perpective art, mainley for begginers. Not just perspective on Items and landscapes, but on faces and eyes and such.like a person with pointing a sword at you(the reader) and how the sword's point and such.
I WOULD LOVE if you did something i havent seen ANYWHERE, different clothing and landscapes from different genre/art styles. for example: Steampunk clothes and places, and notes along with it, and maybe not your stereo-typical fantasy.
OH and maybe how to color TRADITIONALLY since not everyone has a tablet and program, maybe some have copic markers, maybe some even have Crayola crayons, so i think it would help not just you making money but us trying to get there.
How to draw VARIED angel wings, demon wings and even demon horns and characters/clothing since alot of people now-a-days are drawing demons and such. and this is a very famous anime-genre so it would help alot.
Maybe how to draw different fluids, not just in the cup with ice, maybe the ice plopping in theliqued, the puddle splashing, the waterfall, even maybe thicker fluids like blood or slime/goo-ey stuff.
Another thing i havent seen, you dont have to go so in-depth on this but maybe a page, on different views, like how to draw something in the ground, while still showing the above atmosphere and such.
how to draw diffferent 3-d shapes like circles and bodys and such.
GLASSES, something you dont find in books but in anime you fnd ALOT, how to draw different glasses and different characters and how to make them look right on the right character. INCLUDE: your big specs like harry potter, your old lady pink pointed glasses, and your casual teen black thick-ish glasses.
Hands,Feet,Shoes, Clothes, eyes, heads, ears, etc.BUT OF DIFFERENT SPECIES AND GENRE!!
Backgrounds is a MUST-COVER, you gotta do backgrounds DIFFERENT GENRES THIS TIME NOT YOUR USUAL SCHOOL, do something apocalpytic sicne you said u like apocalyptic art in one of your videos (YES IM A CRAZY FAN ^.^)you can even have fun with this. for begginers and advanced.
when you do your clothes part, PLEASE INCLUDE MODERN things from the city views, to the egyptian robes. Like CROP-TOPS AND HIGH WAISTED JEANS WITH PUMPS, To head dresses and dramatic jewelry-filled outifts. FOR BOTH BOY AND GIRL.
different tattoos and markings.,PIERCINGS on tounge, ear, eyebrow ALL OF IT!
I think you should go more in depth with emotions, since u only did 13 in master manga, DO 30 IN THE NEW ONE...and 30 different ones, dont repeat the 12 and then add the missing amount!
How to create a concept page for a character, with the little emotion faces and stuff.
I think you should go getting more advanced as the book goes on, so readers/artists can improve as they go along.
Hats and hoodies, head accesories, NOT THE ONES YOUVE ALREADY DONE, NEW STUFF!!
how to draw a room, messy, clean, rocker creepy! HECK, how to draw a whole house! different houses@ MANSIONS, SCI-FI HOUSE,LABS EVERYTHING.
how to draw people sleeping, different sleepy poses, already sleeping in bed, on the couch, even on the floor with drool!
Wrappers and food. chewed and wrinkled. cans! (look at your brodys-ghost 14-page review post, And youll see what im thinking about)
differnt types of mist.gasses and fogs.
How to draw singers, actors, archeticts ANT OCCUPATION
How to draw ghosts,vampires,lycans etc.
Modern NYC hair styles from curls to bun. and everything in beetwen.
WWEAPONS, from scythes and swords to bow+arrow and Guns!
Different Vehicles.
how to create your own fashion world. like the fashion of Avatar the last airbender (legend of korra) is different, show us how to make our own fashion-filed world!
twords the end you can add a few special realism challanges!
how to draw Car crashes, plane crashes, train crashes!
how to draw the first page of amnga, the large view, the zoom and such, i know uve done this before but something more..idk in dpeth.
arguing shots, couples and enemies,brake-ups and death duels. threw the phone and in a torunament ALL OF IT.
Hmm is there anything else my biggest influence can help us all with....
maybe eyebrows...
robots, mecha, sci-fi stuff. (like i said before)
different places like burgur joints, restaurants, restle-tournaments.etc
hair-pins, earings and purses,etc.
different maps, how to make your own fantasy map and such.
well i gues thats all. i really love you mark. youve taught me life lessons, and i hope you doo all this stuff in your new book. sorry if i repeated anything that u have, i havent gotten your old book, I WILL i really want it! hopefully my parents arent gonna be cheapies and get it for me. <3 you a ton. Maybe one day we can team up...i can only dream ^.^
Much love.
