Some things that I find really difficult are clothing folds, shading and body proportions.

Also, maybe a part about drawing characters "in action"?

Mix of advanced and beginner! Have "If you're a beginner try this"
"If you're already pretty good try this!"
Beginners > basic things
Advanced > more details (like how the muscles and shape on the drawing of an arm or leg should look)

Me and my friends have a lot of trouble with personalizing the face. For example, a cuter girl's face versus a more "mature", serious girl's face. So I think that would be a great thing to put in that book.
I also have a lot of trouble with backgrounds and scenery and how to make one object look further away from the other.
Something explaining proportions and how to keep the drawing the size you want it would be really helpful too.

I've watched the video!Really like it,will order it on March(will be able to save money by then).Also,congratulation on having the book published!

Here,what i think might be nice to see in the second book:

I would like to see more details for angle poses(maybe some guidelines together).An explanation on how to focus on emotions in a manga page and what's best to have a nice catch when drawing the story progress from one page to another(like drawing it so that it's not confusing to let people understand what happened while reading).How to put speech bubbles correctly and there styles(when thinking,shouting,etc).A what to do when drawing a character with a background and foreground in it.

In the second book, I think you should have a section on scenery, or extend the section on perspective.

Great news mark!!! Well I have seen whats in the mastering manga book and plan to buy it myself and I assume this next book will be an advanced one. So what I was thinking was that many how to draw manga books say "Too make a character look sad draw their face like this {insert generic sad face}" So you should have a section going in depth of how to draw believable expressions like how the eyebrows change the emotion or how having the size of the pupil be small it makes someone looks terrified or even something as simple as more shinies in the eyes make it cuter!! But I hope they let you do a second book because that would kick so much ass!!

Just glancing at the video, and from personal experience, and something I don't see a lot in manga how-to books is a guide on how different angles/points of view distort the face. Or just generally how to draw one character in many different angles/emotions and still have them recognizable as not only themself, but human. I know that's one area I struggle in

Kaja-tan [2012-02-26 07:04:25 +0000 UTC]

Okay, personally, I think a how to draw book should be instructional and helpful. Like how to get the basics of clothes folds and the technicalities of it. And the basic ways of perspective and how to figure the body so you know what you are doing. It is great is some one can tell you those things. It gives a person a good foundation to jump off of and climb to great levels. If you can get some one started, then they can develop their own style. So... I guess, put in the building blocks and how the body works. I find that very helpful.

I pre-ordered your book and love it.

Areas that I would love to see:

Fantasy buildings.

Different approaches to manga monsters. How many ways can you draw a dragon?

Any interesting approaches to backgrounds.

1. I feel that the section on close relation could be expanded more, or at the very least I would like it to be.
2. Could you possibly cover contact points in action situations? for example the way a face that is still in contact with a fist as the person is being punched.
3.I loved the way that you did the book. So no real changes there.
4. I would prefer a balance or a higher advance book.
5. The main things I would like to see in a how to draw book other than whats in this one are costume design, more close contact situations (ex. carrying someone holding hands etc.) more comparative view on styles and possibly some examples of drawing armor.

Love your work Crilley keep it up. excited for brody's ghost volume 3.

This is coming from someone who hasn't seen your first book yet. (Its coming in the mail though, can't wait to get it!! )) Anyways some things I would love to see would be.....

Step by step tutorials on how to draw a few of the more common anime/manga poses. I see a lot of manga books showing you how to draw characters in a standing position and maybe in a sitting position if your lucky. I have yet to seen a manga book that shows you step by step how to draw a pose other than basic poses of sitting and standing.

I would LOVE to see an explanation of what hairstyles/eye color and whatnot are associated with different personalities of different manga characters. I would love it if an artbook could show us some example poses for different character personalities. But....yeah.

Also it would be helpful if there was some instruction on how to do correct anatomy. I always have trouble with that. >.< I think the book should be geared more towards intermediate/advanced artists since there already a ton of books out there showing people the basics, while I don't see too many geared toward more advanced artists.

But yep, those are all of my suggestions. Can't wait to get your Mastering Manga in the mail!!

Hey Mark! I haven't bought ur book yet, but by reading some of the comments, and seeing all the previews, I'm beginning to have an idea of what it's like. I think that if you do make a second book, you should make the techniques and the things in it more advanced - so for an intermediate level artist, or even advanced artist. I'm sure many many people would love it, including me ^^ Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I would love to see you add new lessons AND increase skill level on old lessons. Eventually you could have an entire series of books for beginning artists that help them grow to actually be on-par with practiced artists.

Well, I do have your Mastering Manga book and I have to say it's great! I have some difficulty when it comes to drawing backgrounds for the most part along with different "camera angles" such as viewing people from like a bird's eye view ect. One thing I hope you can do is possibly expand on the portions at the end of the first book, Mainly 3 point perspective (since I doubt beginners would figure out how to place the vanishing points off of the page. One thing I keep wondering personally is let's say that you have the bristle paper and want to do a double page spread, and your making the manga on your own how would a person edit the finalized artwork scan it on one heck of a printer/scanner?

Also, maybe you could show a few more expressions (mainly rarer ones)

Sadly, I have yet to buy your first book, but I am still hoping to get it some time soon!
I have been drawing manga style for about 6 years now, and although I have gotten a lot better at it, I still have issues with mastering how to draw hands and feet! Like, there are certain angles I just can't do! They just end up looking really weird.
.___________.
Also, For about the first 4 years of drawing in that style I ONLY drew females! I realized that and began to draw male characters, but their bodies are so much more complex than drawing a girl, in my opinion that is.
It was mainly the abdomen that was hard for me due to all the different muscles and such(Especially the six pack), so maybe if it's not too much you can consider doing that in your next book?
As for the advanced and beginner thing, I highly suggest having a little bit of both, so people who have not mastered the simple steps to drawing manga yet can learn, and people who only have a few things to improve on can also enjoy it.

Other things I would like to see is:
How to draw poses(slouching down, sitting, jumping,etc.)
Wrinkles on clothes
Shadowing
Fantasy characters(Demon, Angel, Wolf Hybrid, etc.)

I hope you look at this Mark:
I just picked up your first book and to be honest, it wasn't what I expected it to be. It is perfect for beginners though, but not really when it comes to drawing the hands and feet, there wasn't really separate tutorials for that. I personally hoped there would be a tutorial on foreshortening (with the characters' body) because that's what I struggle with. Can you please add in hands/feet tutorials and foreshortening?

itotallyrule [2012-02-25 17:16:06 +0000 UTC]

(please don't read this with a surfer accent OR a teenage girls accent. I'm the only boy in a family of girls so I learn american teenage girls grammar from them.)

I got the book today.
It's the best manga book of the 6 I have (and one is even more than 300 pages thick)!!

Okay, here come my answers:

Q.: Which parts need expantion.
A: Definitely the parts about the hands and the feet. I love how you drew that much I could use for reference, but there is not actually a how-to-draw a hand part in it, and same goes for the feet.

A: I think the clothing part can use some expantion: more accessoires, like scarfs and backpacks, and more clothes (guys pinguin costume (gala costume) and a girls dress (a short dress and a gala dress) and some traditional japanese clothes (shire maiden, dojo sensei with that kind of thing Shinpatchi (gintama) and the sensei (sayonara zetsubou sensei) wear)

Q.Which part was not covered:
A: I saw a list of materials, but that wasn't that accurate. I would like a list with the pro's and con's for just pencil drawing, black prisma color drawings, (sakura) inking pen drawings, nib pen drawings and about differend kind of nibs (like a G-nib and stuff like that. It is a shame it never was covered in Bakuman).

A: I missed a part about screen toning (if not computer screen toning)

A: And I missed shadows on clothing, but I really loved the wrinkle pages. They really help me out

Q: Points to improve:
A: I wish you explained how you drew at the background tutorials diagonal lines (like the slope roofs). I mean: How do you indicate (lol) the angle of those lines?
This is the only thing I could find.

A:Maybe it is a good idea to link some of the tutorials with youtube videos (so you put the youtube link in at the bottom of the page or the title of the video). There can also be the issue of moving videos (the audio doesn't work anymore and you have to re-upload it, but the book is linked to the old video). Though, I think this idea will work on the e-reader version.

Q: Advanded or beginner?
A: There already are a lot of beginner books and this first book already covered almost everything! I'd rather have an advanced book with also a lot about how to draw a manga page (really beginning to end). Also I would like things that are actually too not-mainstream, specific or hard for beginner books, like drawing mountains in manga and also light and shadow drawing.

Q: (made myself) In what way is this book other than differend 'how-to-draw-manga' books
A: You really give a lot of choice. You didn't impose only one style and chibi (what most do). You have a large variety and it felt comfortable to merge the styles (like [pg 9] it's not hard to merge slightly cartoony and very cartoony. I found out that was pretty much the style for the girls in the anime 'gintama').
I also liked that the faces look natural. They aren't forced manga. That is probably one of the reasons it was easy to merge styles.

i want to get this book so so so bad! I've seen your videos on YouTube and you have really really helped me become a much better artist ^w^ for the second book you should go into character development, like the basics of how to write back story's, maybe even colouring techniques! i already have a book called "Mastering the art of manga" and its very very good but it lacks how to develop a good character stead of just giving them a name and a face.

I feel really bad that I haven't bought your book yet!
I'll keep begging my parents ;u;

But what I'd like with a how to draw book would be a good balance between beginner and advance, maybe more advance stuff then the beginners because beginners can learn from the advanced stuff too and it also gives them something to target for.
I don't really know what else to say because I haven't got your book yet
But it just looks really good!
So please carry on with your awesomeness~~~

Mark i love mastering manga (i have the ebook version) and the poses section but there are still a few things that confuse me:
1. With the panel or no panel i'm having a hard time on deciding wether something belongs in a panel or not
2. MORE HAIRSTYLES PLEASE
3. Perhaos more Chibi art aswell
4.POSES a few more tutorials on some more poses
5. Hopefully more body proportions as i was a bit dissapointed with no kid sisters and the older siblings.
6. NOT FAIRLY BUFF MALE TEENS! as i have a character who's just average.
7. Between the kid and the teens
Thanks

* Beginners tutorial
*Advance tutorial

~Body Proportions
Namely:
* Different heights of people in proportions
* Different poses in proportions

~Hand Positions
~Wrinkles placement in clothes
Namely:
* Jackets
* Sleeveless shirts
* Skirts
* Japanese Sailor Suits

* Shorts

~Expand the "Comic Panel Making Guides"
