Description Constructed as a replacement following the Challenger loss, Endeavour was the youngest shuttle in the fleet. Named for the famous ship of British explorer Captain James Cook, Endeavour began flight operations in 1992 and enjoyed a long and distinguished career which included missions to service the Hubble Space Telescope, a rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir and assembly of the International Space Station. Her last mission was flown may 16, 2011 and she was retired. Endeavour is on display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Fantastic work! My uncle, Greg Johnson was pilot on Endeavor for mission STS-134 and STS-123, and this is a great tribute to his teams & the shuttle, so thank you!

Endeavour might be the worst Space Shuttle out there, but this is sure epic.

bittersweet and beautiful. being 30, the shuttle is all I've ever truly known for space exploration... and I'm pretty sad to see them put out to pasture.

This is a gorgeous tribute.

I taught a lesson on space flight to some 5-8 graders recently as part of a science program. None of my students recognized the space shuttle. It was rather disheartening to learn that space flight had been pushed so far out of schools.

Gorgeous pic though. Are you going to make prints of this available?

Beautiful work. The SRB's would have been long gone by now, but a beautiful tribute none the less.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markkarvon In reply to Rujero [2012-04-01 00:24:15 +0000 UTC]

My depiction is accurate. The SRBs are jettisoned from the space shuttle at high altitude, about 146,000 ft (45 km). They are pretty close to that moment though. Thanks.

Heatherbeast In reply to markkarvon [2012-04-10 12:04:58 +0000 UTC]

I was wondering about this, thanks for clarifying. I went back to the image and saw that the actual launch point (and the shadow from the exhaust trail!!) are indeed there, so I can accept that this is close enough for the SRBs to still be attached. Many congratulations on the DD, Mark, your work is consistently gorgeous.

By capturing the shuttle so close to the moment of separation, you created the most dynamic image, well done.

A grate picute, but you forgot to mention how that ship was SUPPOSED to go to the Washington Flight Museum....or any of the ships for that matter. I mean, come on! Why dose California get one and Washington/Texas NOT!!

...That was my rant for today.

Wouldn't she technically have shed the two smaller tanks/boosters on the sides when getting this far up?

Either way it's a wonderful painting and a fitting tribute to the end of the space shuttle era. Good work with it and congrats on the well deserved DD.
