Description Constructed as a replacement following the Challenger loss, Endeavour was the youngest shuttle in the fleet. Named for the famous ship of British explorer Captain James Cook, Endeavour began flight operations in 1992 and enjoyed a long and distinguished career which included missions to service the Hubble Space Telescope, a rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir and assembly of the International Space Station. Her last mission was flown may 16, 2011 and she was retired. Endeavour is on display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

My depiction is accurate. The SRBs are jettisoned from the space shuttle at high altitude, about 146,000 ft (45 km). They are pretty close to that moment though. Thanks.

Ahh fair enough. I always thought it was lower for some reason, but that just goes to show you learn something new every day. Thanks for the info.

First let me start by saying this is an amazing job, and great work

But for the small critique if you will forgive me. In this shot Endeavour has finished her roll program, yet the tyvek covers (white dots on the RCS ports) are still on. The covers are meant to protect the RCS system from water contaminating the system, but during liftoff the tyvek covers are set so that they will fall off during the roll program, so at the end the RCS exhaust is clear to fire.

Thank you very much for the compliment and the information. I removed the RCS covers. I wasn't really sure when they came off.

Pity, there will be no more shuttles. In the meantime, the US will have to be dependant on the Russian programme to get people into space.

Gone too soon
I'll definitely miss it

I always look at pictures of these shuttles and think, man what are they going to look like in the future? Because these are the model T Fords of Space transportation and they'll become sleeker, sharper looking space/aircraft at some point.

CitizenXCreation In reply to Berouge [2012-03-31 21:03:10 +0000 UTC]

That's if we ever get to that point. I can't wait to see the new space shuttles. Hopefully, we will get to see them in out lifetime.

I am with you on that statement! Wouldn't it be totally amazing if someone produced a theme space shuttle that actually worked in space? Like a Millenium Falcon? Someday...

In the future, when we finally unlock the secrets of space travel, people will be building star wars replica aircraft like people build custom hot rods today.
