Description The Virginia Class submarine is the newest class of attack boats in the United States Navy. These nuclear powered boats are designed for a wide range of open ocean and littoral missions. Photonic masts, pump jet propulsors, advanced sonar systems, fiber optic fly-by-wire ship control, advanced combat systems and a 9 man lock-out chamber are some of the unique features to this class. Designed as replacements for the older of the Los Angeles Class submarines, the Virginia Class submarines will serve well into the mid-21st century. As always, prints are available through my website www.markkarvon.com.

Fly-By-Wire? Don't they mean "Swim-By-Wire" as it can't really fly. Awesome picture and loved the information about it too!

They are also considered an "evolution" of the SeaWolf class as well...
...though I could be dead wrong.

...Bears a striking resemblance to the Seawolf It would seem they use the same body, added an extra section, iirc.

There's a really awesome subsim called "Sub Command", I don't know of any realistic modern sub sims aside from it, but it's incredible in terms of realism. It's a tad dated, but you'll be using it to analyze demodulated sound profiles, manage contact tracks and plot enemy positions based off of various sensor readings, identify ship type by sound profile, and from that information deduce it's speed with the demodulization... That's just the passive sonar, too. There's the whole array of active sonar, high-frequency active, various arrays of passive, ESM mast, Radar mast, and of course, Periscope, which can be surprisingly relevant even for modern ships, and the station that organizes and consolidates sensory information, and of course the weapons...

All with a soundtrack that drips of the cold, dark depths of the sea and the nuclear-powered boat you operate... [link]

It is an evolution of the Seawolf design with more off-the-shelf hardware used to trim expense.

For modern submarine warfare I prefer Dangerous Waters. [link]

Eagle1Division In reply to markkarvon [2013-02-11 08:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Lol, actually, the two are nigh identical. They even use the same file format for data. Dangerous Waters is essentially Sub Command, added a new station for the subs, the Kilo, FFG, Helo, and P3, and upped the graphics.

Oh, and they changed the soundtrack and a lot of the voice acting.

But in terms of gameplay for the subs, they're identical, though Dangerous Waters is a lot more expansive with the new operable platforms.

But, lol, when I wrote that post I wasn't even thinking of Dangerous Waters as a separate game, though it is

And hmm, I am kinda missing the FFG... I oughta get back to that soon.

They are indeed that! I know there is some serious engineering stuffing all those systems into a stealthy quiet tube.

Nice, Mark but .... I know the sharks and the fish are in the foreground.
In my opinion, should be darker & bigger or submarine should be brighter. Can't see the distance between them. Looks like a giant shark "attacker" this submarine.

This is just my opinion Mark.

markkarvon In reply to dugazm [2013-01-22 16:13:04 +0000 UTC]

Nope. If I make the shark bigger it takes away from the main subject.

markkarvon In reply to Lyle462 [2013-01-22 16:17:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Lyle. When I build the composition on my paintings it usually runs between 60-100 layers. Keep in mind I consolidate layers as I go to keep the number manageable. When I paint the piece I usually paint it in 3 or 4 layers. I always first merge all the background into one layer and just paint that part. Next I add the layers that make up the main subject like the submarine in this piece and paint that element all in one layer. Merging the fish and sharks makes up the third painted layer. Last there are some overlays, shadows, highlights and markings that make up the final piece.
