Description
Known for it's distinctive bent wings, the F4U-1 Corsair was one of the most formidible fighters of World War II. Flown by the US Marines and Naval squadrons, the Corsair racked up an incredible 11:1 kill ratio. The Corsair was used extensively in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Our print depicts the Corsair flown by Lt. Cdr. Roger Hedrick in the markings of naval squadron VF-17 "The Jolly Rogers" taking off from a pacific island base. This is the original version of "Corsair Takeoff" which was picked up by the client. It features the runway.

Nicknamed "Whispering Death" or "Whistling Death" by the Japanese military.

Amazing work, I love all WWII fighters, but the Corsair is by far my favorite, its the most beautiful plane to ever take to the sky! Great work.

Wonderful. I really encapsulates the remote Pacific airfield and the beautiful lines of the Corsair. That era seems so surreal and distant, now.

My dad armed these (actually his unit VMF-311 Hells Bells had F4U-4s), he also handled the recon cameras and gun camera on P-38's

Marines. You know, what's really funny, I had looked up his unit before, but VMF-311 was redesignated "Tomcats" after WWII. There wasn't much I could find until now. Seems My Dad was involved in "The Battle Of Okinawa". He has a scrap book of shots he took during the occupation. It's a bit tough to get him to pull it out though. He was also on mop up operations on many of the islands. After reading the accounts of it all I can understand why it still bothers him. Mom was a WAVE...

Beautiful!
Always loved the plane known as 'Whistling Death' by the Japanese.
Actually got to meet Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (26 kills) of Marine Fighter Squadron 214 "Black Sheep" at an Air Expo in My old hometown.

Thank you. That is cool you met "Pappy". I was fortunate to spend the day with one of the two last remaining veterans from the VF-17. he is a real great guy.

Hmm, looks like either a late F4U-1A, or a -1D, and I would suggest you check the speeling on the title here on deviantART. I'm impressed by the beauty of that Corsair...

The VF-17 flew the -1A version during their time in the Solomons. I corrected the spelling error. Thanks for pointing it out.

Nice! The Corsair is my fave WWII-era fighter, mostly because as a kid I was a HUGE fan of Baa Baa Black Sheep.
