I was pretty sure they used their "Ghost magic" to disguise themselves as a floating brain.
If they had the ability to make skeletal reflections and trap people in cereal boxes, arcade games, hot dog rollers and television screens then who says they haven't made the brain?

...oh my god. We still don't know what the brain was about. We weren't ever given any hint whatsoever, no reference, no indication, no idea. It had nothing to do with the ghosts at all, and wasn't ever mentioned again. What the hell is the brain?
If it was any other show I'd say it was a throwaway gag. But gravity falls doesn't have throwaway gags. Everything has a purpose eventually. So what is the brain monster?

Supposedly Alex Hirsch said it wouldn't be explained. He also said that Pacifica was forever going to be an anti-Mabel destined to be hated. He also sent out a fake image of McGucket as the author.
So... Yeah. We can love and respect the guy but we can trust him as much as we can trust a shipper to respect Canon. Ergo, little and sporadically
