Description My interpretation of the night of November 17th, 1943, one night in a month where the writer of this diary lost many of his closest friends. The object on the left is a heart shield bible, intended to be carried in a soldier's chest pocket to protect his heart from shrapnel. Everything in this photo is original from WWII.

This diary has a unique and mysterious history, starting in the hands of an Italian woman and then finding its way into an infantry unit fighting the Germans in Italy. The entry on the last page of the diary is the one I chose to photograph. It has been a mystery to me for some time now. It describes the death of an unnamed soldier, who according to the diary, had "no last words".

For the history buffs out there, take notice to the words visible on the left page. Hill 1205 was the hill where Cpt. Waskow, made famous by Ernie Pyle, was killed. For anybody who is interested, it's a quick and very interesting read. [link]

excellent shot! I found this pic while checking out the above mentioned feature since I also was featured, and I really like it. Excellent composition colors, and lighting, and pretty much everything in the frame fascinates me. I find myself slightly wishing the whole image was clear, but I understand why you have it that way and I think it was probably the right choice. Really great job, a very compelling image

Very nice shot...I sort of wish that the focus wasn't so selective and that we could read all of the entry clearly, because it's a really engaging photo! I guess this helps keep an air of mystery about it, though. Again, great work!

glad you like the shot. the depth of field was intentionally made as shallow as it is. there were only certain words I wanted to be legible.

Beautifull... I love the tones, colours, composition and idea of that photo. It looks like an old picture, has the mood of past, some warm, feeling of yearning, sentimentality... Beautifull photo...

I definitely know what you're talking about when you say it means so much to you. This is all around a truly sentimental piece. I don't know about you, but the word that is written clearest to me is killed. It looks like this photo was taken while the man who wrote in it last still had it. The glasses and the shield bible were a nice touch to that impression. Did you purposely fade out towards the end of the text? That definitely bumped up the mystery for me.

I wrote about this piece in detail on one of the thumbshare threads recently. Every subtle part of the photo that you mentioned above were all carefully arranged and intentionally included in the shot. Glad you picked up on some of the subtleties.

The composition of this piece is fantastic - the different elements and the different textures come together to create an interesting view, and the depth of field is excellent.

Besides the technical stuff, though, I love the story behind this photograph. I think you did a lovely job capturing a sense of the time period and a sense of the quotidien; this piece has a very realistic and deeply emotive mood and for that reason I think it's a great photograph. nice job.

I love your still lifes! The warm tone was a great choice for the image, and the back story is fascinating. Definately a fave!

By the way, how's the new camera working for you? I bet that 85mm f/1.8 gives you a TON of additional control over depth of field.
