It's a great reference and it inspired me to try to paint it, something i haven't done for many many years. I hope it doesn't look to bad

And still very impressed by the size, and the quality you've put in that "for fun" piece!

I ended up hating painting in the old days so i had to treat this as a throw away exercise or i just would not have even started it. I think paints and me have settled our differences now and we are both talking again

Mark, Mark, Mark! Great job with the paints! Being a pencil master really helps with trying a different medium. Doesn't at all look like you haven't painted in many, many years! It looks great!

It's on A5??!!! I have to use the Holy Crap again

I love it, I really do. I also like that you gave the little fella on the right both blue eyes, it looks great.

I had gouache in college, it stayed in my art bin for 3 years unopened and dried up and died ... it was very sad

markstewart In reply to pbird12 [2012-04-20 11:33:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Paula. It was fun to do because i didn't expect much and i treated it like a bit of fun. The paper did not work that well but i have a piece of Archers left so i'll try it on that (couldn't get on with it for drawing).
Most of my paints have died .. the white was unopened and was still usable and i had a tube of black which i was going to use for a kids project with my son. The good news is that i found a whole collection of unused watercolour tubes so i can't wait to use them ... and no i don't have any kids crayons

No one likes my crayon idea, I'm so sad

Oh watercolours, I'd love to see some watercolour work from you, I love them and so want to be good with them I'll tell you a little secret, I have a drawing on the desk waiting to be painted (for the second time, the first one was very very bad) but I'm too scared to try again

markstewart In reply to pbird12 [2012-04-20 19:33:41 +0000 UTC]

Well you have to do it now your secret is out don't you
They are a bit intimidating i agree. I'm definitely going to give it a go as soon as i find a really simple image to try them on

pbird12 In reply to markstewart [2012-04-21 01:43:46 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I so want to do it and I will, but I want it to be good! Maybe simple is the way to go, this is my ref [link]

markstewart In reply to pbird12 [2012-04-21 10:05:15 +0000 UTC]

Stunning reference, i would not call it simple .. when i think of simple i think of the mushroom reference. I'm sure you can turn it into a stunning piece, if you can do what you did with kid's crayons then w-colour should be a breeze

markstewart In reply to unSpookyLaughter [2012-04-20 11:26:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, i did enjoy it because i had no expectations. I had forgotten what a pain in the rear gouache can be and i had not painted on that paper before which was a pain but yes it was fun. I would like to do more on a more suitable paper.. i found that the paper and paint did not get on with each other at all lol.

unSpookyLaughter In reply to markstewart [2012-04-20 19:59:49 +0000 UTC]

I have not used gouache, but have heard it lifts easily and is grouchy when layered.

I'm finding that playing around with sample packs of paper and paints is just as much fun as the actual painting, hope you encounter something similar.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

markstewart In reply to unSpookyLaughter [2012-04-21 10:20:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes it does lift easily and the layers must be limited. When i worked on scientific illustrations it was perfect for the job. I would have preferred to do this one with acrylic but i have to make do with what i have. I need to try out new papers now as well, i'm looking forward to that
