To be honest, you nailed that. The scene does look surprisingly terrifying in a daytime. Usually, it supposed to be less scary when you can see clearly all around yourself. But that photo says opposite. Interesting.Β

Well, maybe your ("his") stance is to blame. The pose is stable enough, he stands firmly on his feet, but upper body is farther from them, like he recoiled from something(-one) horrid. If the goal is to show despair and grief for dead friends, maybe it is better to swing the upper body toward them, like he is trying to reach whom had lost. His eyebrows are beetle-browed, frowning, that gives the same recoiled, stunned, distrustful, cautious expression, as the stance. The slight uplifting of brows would give some pleading expression, that's the emotion near enough to despair.
The composition is great. I can feel the connection between biggest figure and the man. The gaze starts from the main character and then keeps going over additional figures to the biggest figure. At the same time this figure is far enough from the starting point, so we have time to descry the main character. ButΒ hooded figures are solid, material, maybe more added transparency would be better.

It's always hard to portray in an artwork every meaning and feeling artist conceived, so if it induced at least some of those feelings in spectator's mind, then the goal is achieved! Just keep up good work, it's amazing!
