This is the end, dear friend, I will say it as rudely as the prophets of our lands used to say, this is our end, it seems crazy to say it ... It is ... without hesitation the hardest thing to say. to accept.

You're small, I'm old, you had a great life ahead of you, however, we both will die.

At some point they told us that we would take a path beyond the galaxy we know, and that we would expand through the eons into incalculable territories, but it is time to forget all that, sometimes the unforeseen event leads us to terrible roads since We cannot leave, and there we are trapped, unable to see the light.

I know that I promised you that we would soon run away from this war and go to a better place, and what do you think? Dying is not bad if you do it with pride, my friend, we still have one more mission in this ephemeral existence, we still have to live a little longer ... it may seem that our destiny is a bit unfair, but remember that we accept everything It brings life, but above all we accept what life loses ... daowa-maadthu.

This is the end.

* Congratulations, it has been completed with data cleansing, the last laboratory has been destroyed *

Man, you are rapidly becoming one of my favorite people on the internet. The degree of detail, thematic feel and vividness in which you bring to life these scenes from the books is something that we really need more of in Halo.
And the scene which you create between the naval officer and the boy who served alongside him is simply beautiful. I could feel the man trying to come to terms with the reality of Humanity's defeat and just how short on options they really are. What really caught my attention was how the officer was told by the ship's systems that the only way to secure their secrets from the Forerunners was to sacrifice the ship. If you know the sheer number of varied ways that large amounts of destruction can be brought down on something when space is involved using not weapons, just plain physics, then this fact that that is the only option holds more impact. They were so mauled at Charum Hakkor that nothing works anymore, They can't redirect asteroids or debris, they can't fire empty spare material or escape pods, they can't crash trapped power devices to destroy the data, they can't melt down the evidence with their engines, nothing.

Another interesting thing is that you say that there are 2 survivors at the end of the message. I wonder what became of them, did they live a bit longer,? Did they meet their end in a brilliant flash of light as they held their own against the Forerunners? Did they shelter in one of the lost facilities and see one last sunrise on that world? The image raises these kind of questions, and that is very much a good thing. It is thought-provoking, and gives a new level of meaning and possibility to the lines alluding to the retreat of AHE forces to the Wolf-Faced World after the fall of Charum Hakkor. And as well, I imagine the officer taking one last look at the ships around him before going to finish the final mission, looking back to each mission he knows each ship has been on. He knows their kill counts, their honours, their scars. He knows the men and women who lead them, soldiers who have been in the thick of the bloodiest and fiercest battle in recorded history for 53 grueling years. He wonders if there is anything in the universe which will remember them, any possibility of future beings coming across the ashes and wreckage of those ships and knowing "Once, there was a great people here. They fought with courage and valor, and for the good of all life." Perhaps in another universe, maybe.
