Description Creatures adapted from a rare HP Lovecraft scifi story.

The farnoth fly and ugrat were actually named by Lovecraft after adversaries of his.

This is part of a series of illustrations and concept work I plan to pursue about the short story, which has interesting similarities to Cameron's Avatar; namely that of mining groups going to a tropical alien planet (in this case venus) where you'll die after breathing the air for a few minutes and their trying to mine for stones that power earth cities but are continually thwarted by pesky tribal natives. The main difference is these natives aren't sexy quasi-furries but giant, tentacular lizard-like things.

Thanks! I'm actually more eager to render the flora, as it's quite predatory, which is an idea that's not very common in most in alien conceptions. I also plan on doing a panoramic scenic concept piece and an illustration of a miner surrounded by predatory plants and a few ugrats.

The fun thing about the story, and about much of Lovecraft's work, is he gives enough hints of what the landscape and creatures and technology are like but doesn't actually pin all that much down, which is great for an artist as it gives you the direction you should be going in but also gives you the ability to make your own mark and interpretation of everything.

Very soon I'm going to start a blog, outside of my regular blog, as I work toward illustrating an artbook about Lovecraft's creations--it'll be exclusively about my lovecraft artwork and have in-progress pics of my lovecraft-related creations which span scifi, horror and fantasy, as well as having weekly portraits done of various characters and/or creatures that he created, so stay tuned.
