Description
No ancient statue, no matter how majestic, raises as many questions as the Sphinx standing near the pyramids of Giza. The Sphinx or Shepses Ankh — translated as "strangler" or "living image" — is a monster with the head of a man, the paws and body of a lion, the wings of an eagle and the tail of a bull.
Mythology says that the Sphinx learned one tricky riddle from the Muses, after which she descended to earth and settled on the Ficean Mountain. The Sphinx waylaid travelers and asked them a clever riddle that has come down to our days:
"Tell me, who walks on four legs in the morning, two in the afternoon, and three in the evening? None of all the creatures living on earth changes the way he does. When he walks on four legs, then he has less strength and moves slower than at other times."
Everyone who could not answer the riddle correctly was eaten alive by the Sphinx.
The only one who managed to unravel the cunning of the terrible creature is Oedipus.
According to legend, the Sphinx could not believe that a mere mortal could solve a riddle, the answer to which was not known by all the gods. From shame, the monster fell into the abyss and died, and Oedipus was recognized as the king of Thebes for his feat.
