As much as I am excited bout the new Mortal Kombat game, at the same time Im a little dissapointed that it's still full of the same childish "funny" gore as it has been since MK3 i mean...all this time ive been hearing bout next MK title to be more "serious" and "dark" yet with every new title, characters look more like comic-book superheroes and story gets more and more riddiculous...not that long ago one of the artists that worked on MK vs DC ( Vincent Proce ) put on his blog some of the artworks he did for Mortal Kombat 9 (which at the time was supposed to be a total reboot ) and they ware fuckin brilliant, and i will never forgive Ed Boon or scraping this idea.But, being abused housewife of Mortal Kombat series, i still love it and i wil definetly buy the new one and if you want to kick my ass online, send me a friends request on Xbox live ( marobot88 ) but in the meantime, enjoy my redesign of Scorpion,.

Man, I play the first three MK games every 6 months or so... And I have to tell you... The only MK that isn't 90% "funny" is the first one. And that one didn't even had the narrator say "Fatality". It was written there under "XYZ Wins"... It said "Fatality bonus" with some number next to it - implying you get points.
Right from the second game, they had "Babality" and "Friendship" and all that nonsense with Johnny Cage ripping out THREE HEADS in a fatality.
About the drawing:
I like your art style - The clean outlines and the coloring are quite cool.
His pose bothers me. His legs are close together, facing the opposite direction of where his head is facing, and his torso is twisting... It's almost painful to watch. Also, the way you drew his arms so far from the sides of his body and yet in such a symmetrical way... It demands him to be facing the viewer.
This pose also doesn't really fit the character, in my mind. We're used to seeing scorpion in a fighting stance, his feet at a right distance from each other, his legs just a little bit bent (unless it's his sprite from the early games), one of his hands close to his face, in preparation of blocking or punching...
Also, you wrote a lot of what's on your mind about the new MK, but you said nothing about the specific matter of Scorpion's design and I'm quite interested about that matter.

i wouldnt say they look like super heros g.more like.......Soldiers ready for war or somethin. i mean they arent all bad. Johnny still looks like a smug a-hole. Raiden looks like the god thunder, Kung Lao actually does look like a shaolin warrior (minus the baldness) and Liu Kang is still the Bruce Lee Stan.

FYI, Vince did work for Midway fro 8 years and they wasteed his talent every step of the way. Off the clock, Vince wrote a whole reboot of MK to correspond with his redesigns called MK ZERO, but Boone wouldn't even look at it. That the way it worked at Midway, Boone was King and wanted to stay that way, even it if meant breathing new life into his original creation. Too bad for them! It would have been very cool! If WB is smart they'd get Vince back over there to make MK ZERO and it would BLOW YOUR MIND!

FYI, Vince did work at Midway for about eight years and after work, he went home and wrote a whole reboot story for MK based on his redesigns. It would have been called MK ZERO. Boon wouldn't even look at it! If you know anything about Midway/Netherrealm, Boon is the king & MK is his baby and nobody messes w/ his baby. No matter how awesome it is. He likes being King & isn't ever about to give that up. He lost touch with whats cool a LONG, LONG time ago. If WB was smart, they'd get Vince in there to recharge the whole series and make some serious cash and a whole lotta new fans.

of his overated costumes.
I realy wished they could have make him resemble more of his mk1 slim and smooth outfit, instead of his mk2/ klassic diamond look....
though I do like his alternative costume in the game because its making him live up to his name.

I like your design, and the Japanese style works well. Although he could do with some tabi shoes instead, and the hood looks too much like a beanie hat.
It is well drawn and coloured, but the pose it a bit off.
As for the Vincent Proce thing.... Who's to say Ed Boon himself refused to use the artwork? Maybe it was Midway. Either way, they couldn't use them for MK9 or any others since Vincent Proce doesn't work for NeatherRealm Studios or Warner Bros. - meaning the designs can't be used.
I can agree with one thing though - I do NOT like a lot of the design choices in the whole MK franchise, mostly Scorpion's costumes - especially the MK4 costume, which is one of the biggest design sins in MK history.

Ok so maybe Ed Boon is not to blame...but still, its a great friggin shame they didnt used those designs...they ware what Mortal Kombat series really needs, more serious dark tones, cuz as much as i loved story mode in new MK title, it was silly as hell.
And as for my artwork, i agree bout the shoes (never was good in drawing shoes)and pose might be a little boring (need to work on more dynamic ones) but as for beanie...i dunno, i still think its way better than the ski-mask he's been wearing in most of the MK tittles

The hood from Deadly Alliance - Deception was perfect in my opinion, or at least something similar.
As for my favourite costumes, well, Deadly Alliance and Deception are my top 2. The Deadly Alliance primary would only need slight tweaks to it to make a perfect costume for him, while the MKDA secondary costume was pretty cool too - it was simly but looked great and suited Scorps. The Champion Armour (as I like to call it) he wore in Deception was as it was based on the MKDA costume, while still looking different and unique.
The MK1 costume is good, if not a little to bland, and I find the sash to be a little too baggy - although saying that I find MK2-4 to be way to tight.
I have a few ideas for costumes myself, but I haven't had the time to actually draw them out yet.

One on the chest means "Scorpion" and the other are Kanji for "Shirai-ryu" which is name of a scorpion's fallen clan.

Sorry, Marobot, but I saw Vincent's redesigns and they didn't click with me. Personally, I'm happy with the direction they've taken and look forward to how they twist the story around, especially given how they know who's the favourites and who's the scrappies of the post-MK3 cast.

You mean a "Hollywood" ninja, since real ninja were more likely to wear disguises than uniforms.
I will agree that the Deadly alliance costume is one of the most fitting Scorpion has had, since he is in fact the only NINJA in the game - a Hollywood style ninja costume should be given to Scorpion, and Scorpion alone.

yes, when I said proper ninja I meant the proper image of a ninja presemtly in the current zeitgeist.
Yes. But then maybe all the other "ninja" would have either similar yet different out fit or maybe something similar to the original games. Now if I would to design scorpion's outfit it'd largely based on his outfit from Deadly Alliance with some influence from the recent game, maybe add a bit of scorching and /or burning to it since he has been through hell, and give him his mask from mortal kombat gold

I honestly believe all the characters have fitting costumes.
Sub-Zero has Chiniese influences.; Noob Saibot has a reaper-like appearance which suits his wraith persona; Ermac's is mysterious which goes with the fact he is made up from many souls; Reptiles, I'm not to fond of, it just doesn't seem to be all that reptilian to me; The ladies (Kitana, Jade, Mileena) are Edenian an supposed to be royal - even though they look like slutty royals, they still look like royal-like.
Scorpion's skin-tight under-clothes seem to be based on the exo-skeleton of a scorpion, while his swords represent the pincers, and the rope dart the stinger of a scorpion. So they may be fitting, they just don't look aesthetically pleasing, nor "bad-ass". Since Scorpion is the only Japanese character and the only REAL ninja in the franchise, I think that side of him should be shown, along with something relating to death. After all Scorpion is most commonly and easily description to be an "undead ninja" - not "a guy with an arachnid fetish".
While it is OK for someone like Reptile to have reptilian influences such as scales and claws designed into his costume - that is because he IS a reptile. Scorpion is NOT a scorpion - it is his codename as it more accurately represents his attitude (attacks relentlessly with great speed and strength, and without remorse).
I think Scorpion's weapon of choice should be the ropedart ONLY! NO SWORDS!
As for the MK4/Gold costume - I honest find it to be the worse Scorpion has ever had, and I don't really like the mask as I find it weird to cover up a skull with the mask in the shape of a skull - seems a bit redundant. A mask made from bone is fine, but not that of a skull.
Apologies for the essay, these are just some of my opinions and how I perceive the design process behind some of the costumes, in the hope that people can better understand how I feel about Scorpion's costumes.
