Description In the past few months I received some questions on how I design my various mechs and the likes. Here you have some tips & tricks & do's & don'ts. The most important tip though (which isn't even in the tutorial) is to arrange for some proper, kick@$$ music when designing your stuff.

Just came across this tutorial, and I have to say... How did you get ahold of my secrets?!

I started a mecha a couple years ago based on design. I was going to post the results, but he doesn't like fan art, so I kept it to myself, but I pretty much established the same "build it to the side" concept you stated here. The only difference is that I made my metal man from the ground up. I oddly enough also used a similar method of coloring at the time, but haven't reused that method since then.

About the only difference that I do is I made up "swivel spots" on each of my components and then grouped a bunch of components, so that if I wanted to change his position of his arm, it also changes the position for the elbow, the forearm, the wrist and the hand and fingers.
This was also my intent to do what would be my first animation of 3D attempt, but I never followed up with that...

Very nice presentation.

I gave this a read... I'm a bit rusty... I just wanted to say that having the components off to the side so you can edit them individually is a really neat idea!

very practical and sensible advice! Keeping it simple while maintaining sight of the big picture. Ive definitely taken away positives from this. Thank you so much

Did you use google sketchup for all of your designed bot?

Marrekie In reply to DzArethusa [2012-07-15 13:34:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, all but one. Works great once you have the hang of it.

Oh, i see, ill try it, can i get it for free? or use some crack or SN, is it big? (size), because i wanna try to make something solid, like mecha or something similar, because ZBrush cant make something like that :/

It's a free download. Just google for it and you'll have it installed in no time. The software itself isn't that heavy on your system, but it helps to have a proper vid- card when you're designing more complex models. Have fun man!

I'm trying to make a mech suit in 3D Max, and this was very helpful! I never thought of the whole duplicate thing. And once the model is done you can just gather up all those loose pieces and dump them in their own file for future use!

Heb je van dit model een plaatje met een ''advanced rendering''??
Lijkt me super epic!!!!!

That's sick, i love the head above the cockpit design. and number 18 is useless now with sketchup V.8

this is great, i actually had the bad habit of super detailing parts one at a time and at the end i was left with a badly or no detailed model

I also like the way you have a duplicate of ur components/groups somewhere for later changes...

And it all started in simple polygons . The resulting mech's scale reminds me of a knightmare frame. ^^
