also it happens when Ethan get's kidnapped and Lou is off fighting venus and Max is like imma save EThan and then he nearly falls of a cliff and he's all hurt and shit and ethans is liek NOOOOOOOO and max is like I'm sorry and all angsty an shit but then LOu is like fuck i gotta save mah dad and then venus gets there first and kicks him off the cliff and his fucking arm get's spliced off on the way down.

Honestly he goes through so much crap like, In his dimension there are 14 tiers of the city, each one higher than the last, and people are born into tiers and they stay in those tiers no matter what. People on tier one are the richest, they don't even work they're just born rich, the second tier are like buisness people, and the lower the tiers are the shittier the work is. Tier 14 is like, peasants, they have to scavenge for food to survive and no one really cares about them which is awful. Max was born into Tier 10, which is like, the tier of craftmenship I guess. Like it's where all the blacksmiths and bakers and people who make stuff are. Max was a baker, and he was also a delivery boy, one of the few jobs in THE WHOLE CITY that meant you can travel to different tiers (But only the higher ones) to deliver the baked goods. Most of the customers were on Tier's 1,2 and 3, because they're the ones who can afford fancy cakes n shit. But one household on tier 1 only ever got loafs of bread. Long story short Max was always delivering bread to this guy and they fell in love and ran away from the dimension so they could be together. When they got to OUR dimension they found a child who was basically in the same living state as someone from tier 14, so they adopted her.
She died.
Of old age, after living out a good life. Β all his grand kids died fighting for america during the revolution, and then his husband was killed by demon hunters.
and he was still the equivalent of a human 23 year old.
This is why he;s grumpy all the time, He was faced with humans short life span so he never liked getting attached to anyone, plus the love of his life was murdered, and now he was all alone and on the run.
