As the oldest warship in the African Union's Fleet and one of the oldest actively serving designs overall, the Dingiswayo-Class is nearing the end of a long and honorable history. Having served through both Inner Planet Wars, the class has proven the worth of reliable, versatile designs time and again – qualities now being favored by the Japanese Cosmo Navy over overly specialized designs as well.

Technical Specifications

The Dingiswayo-Class was the product of a joint development initiative between nations of the African Union and Pan-European Federation, before relations broke down between the two powers.

The ship took a notably bulky appearance, originally necessary to fit early bulky components of weapons and reactor systems. Over time, as systems were refined and shrunk down in size, the newly available room was utilized several times to incorporate more modern systems and in the Dingiswayo.

Armament

Over the course of its history, the Dingiswayo underwent several substantial refits overhauling its armament. In 2180, the vessels in service to the African Union were armed mainly with six forward torpedo launchers and two turreted ship-to-ship laser cannons. In second-grade navies, this layout varied wildly and various escort and anti-aircraft variants existed.

Defensive

The means of defense for the Dingiswayo are its significantly reinforced armor, electronic countermeasures and flare dispensers. All of these capabilities were augmented over the vessel's significant service time. However, these retroactively incorporated measures cannot live up to the reliability and effectiveness of later models.

Tactics

Lacking the maneuverability of most vessels of similar tonnage, the Dingiswayo-Class relies heavily on numerical advantage and first-strike capabilities. For this reason, precision torpedo strikes are the main choice for engaging its enemies.
