Description
The So-AU is one of countless semi-automated platforms utilized by the EarthAlliance for purposes of construction, maintenance, logistics and disaster response in both the civilian and military sector. In essence, it is a remotely controlled maneuvering package comprised of an RCS pack, two maneuvering thrusters and a main thruster. The whole package is equipped with hull-clamps allowing the unit to be affixed to starship hulls and station components. The development of the So-AU can be traced back to the origins of modern EarthForce strike craft designs. In a joint effort of Earth's most prominent space-faring nations, cheap and practical thruster packs were developed and distributed to aid in the construction of orbital infrastructure. The military utilized the same technologies for various purposes. Chiefly among those were projects to allow capital-sized vessels to operate as close to planetary bodies as possible for rapid force deployments, fire support and precision bombardement. To this end, assistance units would be used to allow capital vessels to climb out of the gravity well after falling far below orbital velocity. These projects brought about this specific version of the Sub Orbital Assistance Unit, but were discontinued with the introduction of the Omega-Destroyer line.

So it's basically a re-usable parallel staging booster able to be used on different ships?

Basically yes! Though it wouldn't be enough to get any capital ship into orbit from the surface. It just provides enough continuous thrust to maneuver at sub-orbital speeds in near-earth space.

Great stuff man! Its aerodynamics are weird tho

Well, it doesn't have to work in a dense atmosphere, just in near-earth space and on the very fringes of the atmosphere. Plus - it's going to be attached to capital vessels which are in no way designed to enter deep into the atmosphere - so aerodynamics are out the window anyway.

How does it get it up there in that environment the first place?

Just like all capital ships, stations and big pieces of equipment: Built in orbit somewhere, so it never has to bother trying to get off earth's surface!

It's like the resource collector from Homeworld.
The AI sure likes to attack undefended resource collectors...

Speaking of homeworld series......the new Homeworld working groups is called Black Bird Interactive (BBI),it is in Canada.
I hope I will some time to visit their workshop,I'm interested in their new project:Project Eagle.
P.S:What do you think of a homeworld story in Equestria(A nation in My little pony series)?Like:Scientists,Eco warriors and explorers fight against the Government and Mega corps that want to occupie Equestria.
What do you think?

I recently played through the remastered Homeworld Games. They're still awesome, although the remasterd version of Homeworld has some serious balance issues, with some ships (like the heavy corvettes) being nearly useless... Still, I'd like to see a sequel to HW2 rather than some completely new game. I always felt that there are more stories to be told in the Homeworld Galaxy...
Heh, a Homeworld/MLP crossover sounds rather strange, but I've seen stranger crossovers. Could be pretty fun, even. It would be interesting to see how the advanced technology and spaceships of the Homeworld factions would fare against the Equestrians' magic...

《Homeworld:Desert of Kharak》 is about the ground battle, not the space battle.

Well, the first explorers that begin their journey from Earth to Equestria have their own life in that “utopia”.But when they moving into stage 2–Making full scale between Earth and Equestria—something went wrong:Many Governments, groups and Mega corps want to get their own profit from Equestria. When the explorers found out Earth is beginning the occupation of Equestria, they cut off the connection between Earth and beginning the resistance against the Earth‘s forces.

So you're in the process of writing such crossover? Try not to make the humans too evil and imperious (like they were in Avatar, for example). Conflicts are more interesting when both sides have at least somewhat sympathetic goals.
And could one really blame humanity for wanting to study Equestria's magic scientifically? Think of the power we could wield...!

The worst part is, the AI doesn't even need resource collectors. It has infinite resources, although it will stop building warships if it has no operational collectors ;____;

Imagination of this weapon:Drop from the orbit—enter the atmosphere—deploy the parachute—detach the heat shield—land and engage the enemy.

A small but useful tool in the arsenal of the Earth Alliance! While it's fun designing main-line battleships and such, I'm always very interested in small details by the wayside as well!
