though, why does the sword appear to be bent?

It's a Katana.
One of the famous features of it was the curve along the blade. If you look at a Katana straight on like that, it has a bend to it. That bend also made it possible for a samurai to draw his sword and strike with a killing blow at the same time.
Deadly stuff.

I used the hilt of my sword as ref. Tho' it looked as if I was going to stab myself when I was drawing it.
