Jolie was bored out of her mind.

As sole heir to Amanda Uxbridge-Ferreira, the fabulously wealthy controlling stockholder of the powerful Uxbridge-Ferreira manufacturing conglomerate, Jolie could afford to indulge in pretty much any form of debauchery known in the galaxy. Jaunting around known space aboard a cruise liner on a glorified public relations tour would not have been her first choice.

In fact, it had not been her choice.

Mother had insisted that Jolie must start learning how the family business operated. After all, one day Jolie would take over as chief executive officer of those operations. That day might be a hundred years away, or it might be next week. Either way, now that Jolie had reached her majority, it was imperative that she be prepared to step into her mother’s shoes.

To begin Jolie‘s education, Amanda had sent her on a tour of all Uxbridge-Ferreira holdings across the galaxy. It was bad enough that Jolie had to sit down with the managers of each of those facilities and learn how they functioned within the larger operations of Uxbridge-Ferreira. Mother also insisted that Jolie attend a series of public events with planetary officials and celebrities so that she could develop an understanding of how important it was to maintain the good will of the local population.

Thus far, three months into the tour, the experience had been stupendously boring.

The tour would have been finished in much less time had Mother allowed Jolie to travel aboard one of the family’s private yachts. Instead, Amanda had insisted that Jolie make the trip aboard an interstellar cruise liner. Mother felt it was important for Jolie to experience how the “little people” lived.
