Description
I decided to do a tutorial about liquid mask after many people asked me how to use it. At first I thought it was easy, just apply it with a brush, colour over it and when dry remove it with fingers, but actually there are plenty of things you should care and be aware of and none of the tutorial I saw actually talks about these sort of things.Masking fluid is right now the most powerful tool a watercolour artist has available, of course beside the watercolour and a sable brush! You can do wonderful things with it if you just try and if you're careful about few things...
The pic I've used for this tutorial features Ian Curtis (Lead singer of Joy Division) and here's the final deviation:
pics I did using masking fluid:
[link] <-- Stina Persson is a fashion illustrator who uses liquid mask A LOT. Check her website, is amazing.

It's interesting that you removed it with your fingers. I've always been told to use an eraser. I'm definitely going to try it that way the next time I use it over pencil. :3

I've long nails, so it's easy for me, but either that or the eraser ist' just the same...

Mm, will masking fluid ruin wood if I put it on that kind of surface? Colored wood with acrylic, to be exact.

Β°_Β° dunno, never tried it. I suggest you to try it on another piece of wood (not the one you're using for painting) and then see the result...

Yeah, that what I thought at first. I'll try that on a different piece.
Thanks anyway.

Many thanks for the hints. I sometimes use masking fluid for watercolours, but it often ruins my paper when I'm trying to remove it. It's exasperating...
Since I water the masking fluid a little (I know, actually it's not allowed), it's better to use and much better to remove.

actually watering it a little should help a lot, just don't exagerate 'cause it may be difficult to remove it later...

Aa thanks for this tutorial! There's a lot of stuff I didn't know.
I have a bottle of masking fluid at home but I haven't had time to try it yet. Reading this made me eager to try, though .
I heard the white parts of eggs are good masking fluids too. Eever tried that?

Super helpful.
I bought a bottle of masking fluid this afternoon but I've never used it before. I needed it for an ink painting I'm doing for school. I was a little bit mystified about how to use it so this really cleared things up.
Thanks
Great painting too by the way

yeah, well, it's a media quite difficult at the beginning, mainly because it's a bit difficult to spread on the paper...

I wouldn't recommend to use it on extremely cheap paper - it still tears the paper T_T
anyways, very helpful tutorial!

T_T extremely cheap paper is the devil itself. by the way you can't even use watercolour on cheap paper...

If you're not afraid of wrinkles, you can
I used such with masking fluid and ink for this [link] - and tore half of the covered space with fluid. After that I didn't even try

Actually the really first watercolour I ever did were done on... well... XD print A4 paper... (i.e. [link] ) it helped me a lot to understand how to use few strokes instead of going over the same spot again and again.... By the way, I would NEVER use masking fluid on that one... XDD it could be dreadful!
