My god, this thing took me forever. You can find the final result here:
tell me if you find it useful and if you need other tutorials.
EDIT
ok, FAQ:
How did you transfer the sketch to the watercolour paper?
Sorry, I forget to explain that. Simply by copying. It helps me correcting the errors. By the way if you're not able to reproduce a drawing you've done you can use light table or, just a window. XD

Ooo! This is very helpful! But I have a question. When you finish drawing on the watercolor paper, do you ink them or just leave them in pencil?
Thank you!

I must needs to learn how to do this... Your tutorial is very informative and detailed. It'll take me some time to read and re-read it to gain a fuller understanding of how to use my watercolor pencils. I have a brand new box of them but (alas) probably bought them with too much gung-ho and no know-how.

I'm slightly confused. On section 3 ( the watercolour and guaches section) do you swap from watercolour pencils to watercolour paints? If someone could help me out that would be great
Wonderful tutorial by the way I've had watercolour pencils for a while now but i've been too scared to use them

great tutorial! so when you said you added heaps of water to the trees do you dry your brush between strokes? as in you add a bit, dry, then put more water on, add a bit, dry? i feel like i just soak the paper and it goes all crap (just using cheap paper, as a beginner)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
martinacecilia In reply to anzella88 [2012-03-14 17:56:42 +0000 UTC]
I'd say I do 4 or 5 strokes before drying the brush. by the way I never use too much water, I'm always careful. Let's say I don't even sink the brush entirely, just the tip usually.

Can you tell me how you transferred the picture from your sketchbook to the watercolour paper? Did you use tracing paper?
I tried to print a picture onto my watercolour paper but my printer doesn't want to work with it, probably cus the paper is too thick TT_TT
Please help because i really want to colour this picture i drew digitally with watercolours! <3

I use light table usually. if you don't have one use a window to trace it from the sketch! (it's not very comfortable and you can do it only by day, but a lot of people does it this way)

Ohh okay thank you! Actually my boyfriend just bought me a light box for Christmas lol i'll just have to be patient xD In your tutorial you mentioned water resistant inks, are there any brands of pens with that type of ink?

Wow I found this totally helpful as I read through it. I have Derwent watercolors and I also struggled to shade; I just plop down more of the color hoping until it gets to the shade I like, no matter how many times I have to paint, let dry, paint, let dry. I'll definatly be using this when I work on watercolors.

How do you trace your sketch over to the watercolour paper?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
martinacecilia In reply to Nezim [2011-06-11 20:36:57 +0000 UTC]
In this case I copied 'cause the drawing was simple, but usually with light table. of you don't have it on a window.

Nezim In reply to martinacecilia [2011-06-11 20:44:22 +0000 UTC]
I see, thanks. Do you think it's necessary to tape the paper to a wooden board or cardboard?
I don't have any experience with watercolours, so I don't know how much water it takes for the paper to curl.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
martinacecilia In reply to Nezim [2011-06-11 21:02:48 +0000 UTC]
If you're at the beginning you'll probably use cheap watercolour paper (as you should. when beginning it's ALWAYS better to use this.) so it will curl right away.... so yes, you should tape it, or at least buy one of those pads with 4 sides glued (there are cheap ones of those. don't ask for arches or brands like those, ask for a "student quality watercolor paper pad" about 140 lb You don't need more for now.)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Nezim In reply to martinacecilia [2011-06-11 21:09:10 +0000 UTC]
I've bought some fairly cheap paper, yes It does have the sides glued, but I'll lose the point of that when I take it off for holding up against a window.
I will tape it
Thanks for your valuable help <3

martinacecilia In reply to Nezim [2011-06-11 21:25:52 +0000 UTC]
XD right I wasn't thinking of that. In fact I use the pad when doing a fairly fast drawing that'll need only few structure lines for the drwing, and tape the paper if I do something more complicated that need tracing...

Nezim In reply to martinacecilia [2011-06-11 21:36:17 +0000 UTC]
I can see why ^^
Well now I have the sketch on normal paper, so there's no going back. This is what I'll apply your watercolour pencil techniques to, if you'd like to see [link]

Nezim In reply to Nezim [2011-06-11 21:41:45 +0000 UTC]
..right, I'm glad I have the sketch on normal paper - when trying to get the watercolour paper off the pad, I totally ripped it apart.. xD

uhm i just got the derwent watercolour pencils and im having a hard time getting used to them, but how do you get a color and make it darker or lighter? i used to just draw and shade with pencils so just new to coloring...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
martinacecilia In reply to Zoncis [2011-05-01 11:03:26 +0000 UTC]
that just depends on how much pigment you put on the paper, so it depends on the lightness of the pencil trait. Less pencil, less colored also when you add water, more pencil more color.
