How do you transfer a drawing? I can't draw due to tremors in my hands, so I print out pictures on 90 lb bristol to color using colored pencils. I'd like to color with watercolors though, but I really don't want the lines to show very much, and watercolor paper + printer = death.

I use light box or light tracer and HB pencil. Why watercolor paper + printer = death? You can scan your sketch then use PShop and make your lines almost invisile\more transparent and then print with waterproof ink. I did it several times using lana hot pressed paper is is almost the same smooth as Bristol and it worked well

I don't have photoshop; I have a knockoff version of it and it doesn't have the option of making the lines more transparent. Plus, I found out my ink on the printer isn't waterproof, and I don't have the money to get waterproof ink. Hence printer = death

I also have only Photoshop Elements 5.0 which is OLD unfortunatly it is in German that's why I don't know how to call tools correctly sorry but I will try to explain You need to scan your image and open with PSh then you need to work with layers. Create a new file white in color this will be background layer, then apply your scanned drawing on it it will be the first layer .now you can change\reduce fill opacity of this layer which will make all the colors pale . Then you must use Flatten Image command it will merges all of the layers of the image into a one single layer. Now you can try to print it. btw if you make it very pale and print black and white you can use usual ink too, sure it will run a little while you will be painting but it work well, especially if you are planning to use dark colors
ok.. I hope it will be of any help
PS:You can also transfer a drawing using graphite paper, you don't need to buy it you can do it yourself...

I'm working on water colors, and this is the first time I've heard of using graphite paper to transfer a drawing. Great idea! Can't wait to use this. I've got a lot pencil and ink drawings, and after years of just doing that, I want some color in my work.

I have one question though: do you wait for your 1st layer to be dry to paint the second, or do you paint wet on wet ?
Thanks

JannaFairyArt In reply to Siegfried40000 [2010-05-12 17:42:48 +0000 UTC]
I suppose you ask about the background layers... Anyways, I don't work wet on wet. I wait about an hour for the first layer to be dry and then I apply the next one. You can also use a hairdryer if you don't want to wait so long.

Hm.. strange...When do you actually sprinkle salt? You should do it when the surface of the paper is still humid 9 not too wet and not dry), it won't work if you add salt when the paper is dry

Red-Pocky In reply to JannaFairyArt [2009-09-09 20:51:06 +0000 UTC]
I sprinkle it after I paint the paper, but it's not wet to the point where you can see the water.
I used seasalt, do you think that would be a problem?

I have a hard time with blending the colors out nicely. When you're painting skin, do you let each layer dry completely before adding the next, or do you paint the second layer when the first is a little wet still? (I know you wait for layers 1 and 2 to dry before adding the golden ochre.)

JannaFairyArt In reply to mollygrace [2009-02-19 18:26:10 +0000 UTC]
I let each layer dry compleatly before I apply the next one, the waiting time between the layers is approximately one hour *normal room temperature* you can also use a hairdryer if you are getting impatient. You can smudge the colors if you don't let layers dry. It is quite seldom that I work wet on wet, only for to paint some distant objects which should look blurry or for to paint clouds.
I am sorry for the late answer, i was something lazy with answering the comments this week

I have a question:
The sketch is drawn by pencil right? I find that watercolor over pencil doesn't look quite that good and difficult to erase afterward. Is there a point where you lineart/erase the pencil marking?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JannaFairyArt In reply to neocoolstar [2008-12-01 11:28:06 +0000 UTC]
I use a H (or 2H) pencil for to trace the outlines, they usually look fine almost not visible and I don't need to erase them they are not seen at all.
You might have the problem with ugly black lines only if you use a B( or HB) pencil...
