Description

Light streamed in Esmerelda’s eyes as she awoke from a pleasant sleep. She almost didn’t want to wake up on the account that she doesn’t sleep peacefully a lot or have good dreams. Thankfully she had no dreams at all this time instead of the nightmares that usually haunt her. Giving herself a few moments to adjust to the sunlight she blinked repeatedly before opening her eyes wide to greet what lay before her. The litten saw a wide expanse of trees all around her and she could see the purple dawn sky between the leaves as they moved passed. The breeze was light and the air was cool. What a wonderful day.

Yawn.

“Good morning Essie.” Her big gyarados friend said. It was then the litten realized that she was resting on top of his head as he floated through the forest.

Esmerelda held onto the top of his crest. “Good morning Johan.” She yawned once more.

“Did you sleep well? You didn’t toss and turn as much.” He asked.

“I did actually!” The litten said with excitement and pep. “No dreams, but no nightmares!”

“That’s good to hear.” Sincerity dripped from his mouth. He was overjoyed that she had a decent night sleep. Especially when today was going to be so new.

Esmerelda looked ahead. It was hard to see through all the trees and they all looked the same. She tried to figure out where they could be with no such luck. “Hey yo-yo, where are we?”

“Mosswood.” He replied as he swerved through some trees. “We are very close to Tabira. We should get there as the sky turns completely blue.”

Esmerelda paused. Rather baffled, she leaned over Johan’s crest to look him in the eyes. “We’re almost there already?”

Knowing he shouldn’t nod with his friend on his head he simply replied with, “Mhm. We left as the moon was rising last night. Plus I’m pretty big and can make trips faster.”

“Oh that makes sense.” The litten said. She was torn, she was glad they made good time but she wasn’t expecting to get there so soon. She liked to know things in advance. “And the stuff we brought isn’t too heavy is it?” She said referring to the four large pouches strapped around Johan’s back.

“No they are fine. I can handle it Essie you should know that.”

“I know it’s just, I’m not used to this new and evolved you yet. You became a gyarados only a couple days ago.”

“If you’re not used to it imagine how I feel!” Johan chuckled to himself. “I went from one foot to twenty-one foot in a matter of moments! I’m just glad I’ve gotten used to it pretty quick.”

“What was it like?” Esmerelda asked in wonder. “Evolving. Did it hurt?”

Johan paused in the forest, unsure of what to say. “It was uh…indescribable.” He waited for Esmerelda’s response.

“Cool!”

For the next little while they chatted as they made their way through Mosswood. They made guesses as to what Tabira would be like and what they would miss most about their old home of Xin Tou. Johan cracked witty puns and Esmerelda made a plan of the day. Soon they noticed that the forest was coming to an end as a clearing could be seen in the distance. Past it, a ginormous tree spewed out of the ground and seemed to reach the sky. The two friends looked at it in awe through the forest. They were told Tabira was around a big tree, but they never imagined it was that big.

“Hey Johan, can you help me get down so I can stretch my legs? I want to run for a minute.” Esmerelda asked.

“Sure thing.” Johan bowed his head and felt some pressure as his friend jumped off. “I’ll catch up.”

“Ok!” Esmerelda said as she began to sprint towards the clearing up ahead. Kids at Xin Tou made jokes that she looked like a long noodle when she ran, forming the nickname ‘noodle cat’. She didn’t mind or take offense. Noodles are delicious after all.

She began to get faster and faster as she charged to the clearing. She squinted in determination as she planned to see how far into the clearing she could jump.

3, 2, 1, now!

Esmerelda sprang off the grass and flew into the air. Her paws outstretched as she felt the wind through her fur, imagining what is was like to fly. Did it have the same rush? Was it as free as this felt? She might never know. Coming back to reality she eyed the ground as she prepared to land. She felt the grass between her toes as she came back down to earth. Esmerelda stopped herself dead in her tracks so she could look back and see how far she jumped. As she turned around she was flooded with joy as she saw the distance she went.

“Wànsuì! Eleven feet! That’s a personal best!” She jumped up and down, proud of her personal accomplishment.

“Well done.” An unknown voice said and began to clap. “Where are you headed?”

Esmerelda turned around to see a shifty looking braixen in the middle of the clearing. He wore navy gloves, a navy hat, a black belt, and the most mischievous smile you’d ever see. He was holding his twig in his crossed arms. Esmerelda glared at him. “Tabira, but what’s it to you?”

“Ah Tabira. That good ol’ place. It’s nice there.” The stranger said.

“Yeah so I’ve heard. Now look mister I need to get there so, if you could just move-“

“Xavier.” He interrupted. “My name is Xavier, and I’m afraid I can’t let you pass.”

Perplexed, Esmerelda asked the stranger out of curiosity and frustration, “Why?”

“I can’t let you pass unless you beat me in a duel of honor!” He pointed his twig towards the litten. “Give me you best shot and if you beat me, I will let you pass.”

Esmerelda was unsure of what so say or do. She was caught very off guard by this guy. Suddenly, she heard how close Johan was behind her in the shadow of the trees. An idea hatched in her brain. “Do I have to be the one to fight or can my friend do it? He would love to battle you.”

“Hm.” Xavier paused to think. “Well, if he’s up for a fight I don’t mind at all! Where is he?”

Esmerelda sat down in the dew covered grass and sneered at the braixen as she heard Johan behind her. He slithered right up and glared at Xavier for he had heard the whole thing. He bent his head down and hissed through his closed mouth.

“Ni hao bitch.”

Xavier quivered. Out of all his previous opponents, none were this large and scary. He could feel his attack drop at the sight of this intimidating gyarados. “U-uh…”

Esmerelda snickered. “You sure you want to fight? Or do you want to sram and stop bothering travelers?”

The braixen bowed his head. “Fine, I’ll leave.” He walked away into the trees as he let the pair of friends go.

Esmerelda chuckled. “Well that was easy. He was pretty weird huh?”

“Yeah I would say so. At least we can get on with the trip without further complications.” Johan said.

“Agreed. You know how I hate complications.” Esmerelda agreed.

Johan bowed his head to let his friend climb back on. The litten jumped on his head and held onto Johan’s crest as he rose back up. “Let’s go!” The gyarados got back into the air and floated across the clearing. Suddenly a searing pain took over his body as electricity crackled in his every fiber. He roared and lurched in pain causing Esmerelda to fly off. She bounced a few feet as she hit the dirt. She could feel blood start to drip from her shoulder as she slowly got up.

“Johan!” She cried in worry before hearing a malicious laugh.

“Like I said, only if you beat me will I let you pass!” Xavier said as he emerged from the Mosswood trees, electricity still buzzing on the tip of his twig. He lifted it into the air causing multicolor squares to appear, making an arena with all three contenders inside.

"I'm ok Essie..." Johan said, struggling to regain himself. "Are you?"

"Yes." The litten huffed, disregarding her injury. "Let's take this tricky guy down."

Esmerelda charged at the braixen. With lightning speed and ejected claws she slashed furiously at him. Bits and pieces of yellow and orange fur began to fly everywhere. Xavier desperately tried to block the blinding attack with his stick to little avail. Needing to get Esmerelda away from him he sent another shock wave from his body, pushing the litten away from him in a yellow fury. Esmerelda groaned and twitched as the electricity coursed through her body, making her fur stand up.

"Essie!" Johan cried. He snorted and glared at the braixen. "You'll pay for that you son of a bitch!"

Xavier simply laughed. "No no, I think I'll take your stuff though! When I've won of course. it certainly seems that you have an awful lot in your bags there!"

"You cheeky little-" His blood boiled in anger from the path-blockers response. He summoned that anger in a wave of darkness that hurled its way at Xavier, knocking him clean against the barrier he had made. He barely had time to think as he saw the angry gyarados charge at him, fire spewing from his mouth. In one motion Xavier turned and dashed out the flame.

"Ha!" He said in his small victory. Just as he shot fire balls back at Johan he felt his shoulder being crushed under the weight of Esmerelda's bite. The litten could taste his blood start to seep into her mouth. She could then feel static forming in her opponents body. Knowing the coming electrical attack, she leapt away and summoned a ball of impenetrable green energy around her. She watched from inside as the lightning passed her.

Caught off guard by the littens protection, Xavier paused a moment longer then he should have. Johan saw the oppurinity and took it, spewing boiling water at the braixen. A large shout could be heard as Xavier was pushed back by the sheer force of the water. He laid in the ground in pain as the water seeped into his bite wound, causing the blood to mix in. He groaned and held up his paw as he saw his opponents coming towards him. "Wait wait! I, huff, I surrender. P-please, don't attack."

With a wave of his gloved paw he removed the barriers that kept them all in. He held his shoulder tight as the braixen scrambled for the cover of the Mosswood forest. The two victors stayed silent as they caught there breath. Johan was already exhausted from traveling all night, and Esmerelda has just woke up.

"Well." The litten started. "That was uh, one way to start the beginning of life in Tabira."

The big gyarados couldn't help but chuckle. "You are certainly right." He caught his breath for a few more moments before continuing. "Now," he lowered his head to the ground. "Shall we get going?"

With a smile Esmerelda skipped to her friend and onto his head as they began the final short stretch of their journey to a new adventure in Tabira.
