i used them a lot - n i still do, for most of the time
u might notice that most artists here are inspired from the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron movie, but i started my doodle practice from an ol' horse racing manga called Kaze no Sylphid, esp with the artist's later drawing style (ex of the manga ) - my "style" in drawing horse was highly influenced from that manga, esp the 'expression' i give for my horse-based charas or creatures
if u think drawing real life horse is too hard at 1st, u can start by practicing drawing fictional horses too, since i believe most people will probably prefer fictional/2D one over the real life one in long practice - n assuming u love horses, i believe u must hv at least 1 or 2 fictional horses (tho i wont recommend MLP for practice unless u DO want to go with that style forever xD;; ) for u to practice to draw
n after u're used with the fictional horses, then u can practice getting used to real life photo of horses - fixing the weird anatomy that fictional horses might hv, n after that, it just a matter of time till u're used to it ^^

heads up tho, the drawing style in the early part of the manga (the 1st few volumes, at least) aint that good - n the anatomy is very off here n there xD;;
but the mangaka improves a lot the more the chapters go, n then u'd probably notice a trace of my style among his on the later half of the whole series ;D

Which I really like in a manga it just shows that even mangaka start somewhere and improve by drawing
