Description
Canon EOS 6D | EF 70-200 f/4L IS @ 135mm | 1s, 1/4s | f/11 | ISO 100Perhaps not the most original shot ever, this is a view of Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite National Park, taken from the oh so famous Tunnel View.
This was taken the day of a freak winter storm, I was hoping to catch some clouds or the clearing storm. Unfortunately, by the time I made it up the mountain and into the park, the skies had almost completely cleared and I was left with some rather ordinary light.
However, as the sun set, the remaining light lit up the side of the mountain, and just before the sun set, the light on the side of the mountain turned some great shades of orange, red, and pink.
I struggled with this image. This was a very very technically challenging scene to capture and process. The sky and illuminated portion of the mountain were significantly brighter than the lower portion and the valley below. This image is made up of two shots, one exposed for the valley and mountain, and the other for the illuminated portion of the mountain and the sky. I had originally tried to do this image with another pair of shots taken a minute later, but eventually went back to this pair due to more of the mountain being illuminated. After spending quite a bit of time tweaking the RAW conversion settings, it was a simple matter of bringing the two layers together and erasing out the portions I didn't need.
I may also be back with a few more images captured in a similar fashion. Enjoy!

Wonderful capture Mashuto! Congrats on your two exposure contrast masking. No need to mess with filters on-site. More flexible too!

Thanks Jonathan! I am slowly moving away from my grad ND filters as I experiment with different ways to blend exposures and get the results I want. I do like my filters for the instant feedback of knowing what the shot will look like, but exposure blending is definitely more flexible, although doing it properly takes more effort in post.
Also, if you are still in the DC area, we should go shooting sometime! I will probably be heading down to shenandoah at least a couple times this summer, and probably out to wv again in the fall.

You are lucky to see the color change on top of the mountains!! Went down there several years ago.
I enjoyed my visit. Did take pics but nothing like these

Yea, I have found that the light does become rather great on the tops of the mountains as the sun sets, regardless of what the sky is doing. Glad you like the image!

Thanks so much! Don't forget though, its not necessarily about the camera you use, but about technique, skill, and the person taking the picture!

This is my favorite time of day the High Sierras, when natures magic lighting effects transform realities.

Yea it really is a great time of day, when you get to watch the shadows creep slowly up the side of the mountains as the light slowly changes from white, to yellow, to orange, then red and finally pink.

Thanks LeeAnne! I have to keep practicing these editing techniques, who knows what kind of images might be hiding in the archives.

You might be right, and i would agree that beautiful places can never be photographed enough. That being said, it is a spot that has been shot many many times, so doing something original is difficult and thats what i strive to do! Also, thanks!
