No, it's not useless. Think about most of rock/metal professional bassist do it, so it's not useless at all. Sometimes guitar riffs need low-freq supporting and get stronger. Find the song's perfect moment to improv and make an original bass line, but when the guitar riff has to be played unison, it has to be like this!
Anyway, playing with good musicians is always good! For me, this is the best way to improve your skills, even better than teachers.

i know Dean cos it was, for many years, the manufacture behind the guitars of Dimebag Darrell (and many other artists) but never saw till today this kind of bass... It's priceless
