Sean wasn't meant to get hurt.
Mark fluttered to the ground, landing softly on his knees, away from the burning city.Β
Mark was too late. He was always too late. He was never there for Sean.
The clouds parted from the moon over his bowed head, gazing with mournful, broken eyes at the limp, cold body of Sean McLoughlin, cradled in his arms the way that Mark wished he could have held him.
Except that he was dead, of course.
Dead because he was a failure.
Mark closed his eyes as a single tear slid down his cheeks and turned his head up to the sky.
He kneeled there for hours on end, ignoring the pain he felt. If he died he'd get to see Sean again, so why shouldn't he?Β
The deep, crooning voice of Dark whispered to him, Mark, please. I-I know we don't get along that well...as well as we did...but would he want this?
The stereotypical line did nothing to comfort Mark. But nevertheless, he did move. He laid down Jack on the ground and covered him with his shirt that he had taken off. He kissed his forehead, walked off a bit, looked at the fallen body, unnaturally pale in the cold white moonlight, and unfurled his glowing wings, flying away from the pain.
Not that he could ever leave it behind.

Greetings!
Regarding what happened that would lead to this scene happening? Apparently something seriously escalated and things got tragically out of hand. As far as we know in this mini-community, this scene and whatever led up to it is non-canon to Mask's world and really has very little bearing on the story Mask is doing her best to tell... outside of being a chance for her to exercise her creativity and lending us viewers some insight into Mask's world.
In regards to making a fanfic from this piece: Everyone has to start somewhere. Start here and hone your craft to the best of your ability. There is such a thing as first draft, second draft, third draft, etc. before a final draft is written and published. There are many kind folk here that are willing to help you improve and hold your hand through the process; don't be too shy about asking.
Yes, Mask already has an author aboard to write an official 'canon' for these fanarts of hers, but both Mask and the author are actively wanting others to be inspired and make their own take on the concepts shared here (provided you credit Mask for the original idea and link back here when you finally do share what you've come up with.)
Don't let your measure of skill be a limiting factor in what you want to write or create. If and when you improve, one can always return, revisit, remix, and redo. It's always good to do that; helps one see how far they've come.
