From section 4 of the official terms...
You may not include any copyrighted, creative commons or fan art images, including but not limited to logos or images taken from video games, television programs, movies, cartoons, comic books, and the like. For example, you may not include imagery from Super Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt, Frogger, Donkey Kong or any other images that are not your own including stock.

Unless you aren't actually entering into the 8-bit challenge... then I suppose you're fine.

i couldn't read the rules cause fyi, my security system popped up an didnt let me go to it. Its done that ALL THE TIME since i thought about entering a contest. maybe DA should look an see if there site if freaking virus safe. but whatever, it didnt get picked, whatever, I STILL LIKE IT. i can do what i want.

So... why the hell did you get mad at me for quoting the rules for you? Not my fault your security system on your computer is buggy (because there is no virus on it I have a really good program and I've yet to get a virus hit on ANY rule page here on DA) and it's certainly NOT alright to do what you like in terms of ripping off copyrighted work. Which is what you have done. If you ever wanted to go into art professionally and got caught doing 'what you want' in terms of using copyrighted pieces you would get sued, get fired and be ridiculed by all of your peers.
