Description
Christianity will be a major player in my story. (especially Catholicism due to the story taking place in both Spain and Poland.) I'm tired of the bizarre portrayal of Catholic Priest in modern film/television... Some of them are dear friends of mine and I'll use this as a chance to prove they are normal people.Father Ricardo is your typical Spanish Priest, don't let that smile deceive you... he's as tough as nails and tends to speak his mind. He's the pastor to Charlemagne's village area and is a very influential member in the local society.
Despite the Second Spanish Republic's ban on religious schools the nuns of the area continue to teach children instead of secular teachers, it's mainly due too them being in the countryside and no one exactly cares about the laws/rules the government puts out and plus the nuns have always been an essential part of the peoples lives.Β Mother Mary Salma is the stoic mother superior of the convent/school. She's the more main character out of the bunch and is feared by the children for her strict discipline. The most interesting part about her character is the fact that she used to be Charlemagne's girlfriend back when they were younger but gave that life up to become a religious... I think that would be fun character development. Lol
Sister Maria Sara is one of the kindest nuns at the school and is well loved by the children, if they are ever to be caught misbehaving they hope Sister Sara would be the one to find them instead of Father Ricardo or Mother Salma.
Sadly a side character doesn't begin to describe Father Gawe, so far I plan on only having him appear in the first chapter. I like his character, he's actually Polish (first chapter takes place in Poland... for now any way.Lol) and is the type to rush headlong into battle in order to help anyone he can. He's probably about to go in the image I drew, hence the purple stole.

Interesting characters and nice style!
It's interesting to see a story about the spanish civil war made by a foreigner, I wonder how will it unfold. In spain, the war is still a sensible topic, due to the dictatorship lasting all the way up to the 70s and ending with a "democratic transition" in which the basis of the new system and constitution had to be aproved by members of the fascist regime. That and that the regime had plenty of time to hide their crimes and do whatever they wanted.
Anyway, I don't know how much is known about our civil war outside Spain. Here, almost every year we get a new movie about people suffering in every possible way during the war and postwar years.
And... I think you have had a great idea in including members of the Catholic Church in your story, beacause religion was a very important factor in this war (and in the other three wars we had in the century before, lol).

I'm glad that you're interested in my story! Sadly production has stalled due to the time it takes to produce such a thing. The necessities of life can be very pesky at times.
Our own Civil War is still quite controversial too. However I beleive that's pretty silly, it was almost 300 hundred years ago. Your Civil war is talked about a bit over here, but sadly there has been a loss of interest in history overall here in the states. The modern world and school system makes the past feel irrelevant to a lot of young folks.
Being that basically all of the Americans who ventured to Spain (Abraham Lincoln Brigade, Ernest Hemingway ect.) sided with the Republic, the Communist side of things is only what we hear and not much more.Β
Yes, I met a Spanish Priest who had lived in Spain as a young boy during the conflict. He had some interesting stories that's for sure.

Wait, the american civil war was less than 150 years ago, not 300. 300 years ago the US didn't exist.
Here's the thing about the republic's forces... It was doomed to fail due to internal divisions. When the uprising started, most of the army sided with the nationalist side, and the only ones that rised up in force to defend the republic in force where the anarchists. And it's quite impressive what they managed to achieve, first storming weapons depos with dynamite in hand and ramming with cars, and then moving to occupy contested territory, setting up supply lines and weapons and armored cars factories. Of course, being anarchists, they didn't really like the "bourgesie republic", and so theyΒ abolished money, burned churches and did a lot of terrible things to the "enemies of the people" in the territories they controlled.Β
I have to point out that anarchism is not only chaos. It's about going straight into a comunist society, without money, class or religion, but not without organization. Everybody has something to do.
While the anarchists where fighting the nationalists, The comunists started organizing in the cities, creating the people's army, a real army with uniforms, ranks and all that. And thanks to the soviet support, they became the most powerful repubilcan faction. Also, the soviet support meant soviet influence, and as the democratic powers vetoed interfering in the civil war, the republic drifted towards Stalin.
I can't imagine the despair the capitalists who suported the republic felt, as they where goinng to be punished by both sides.
The comunists wanted control, but the anarchists (who saved the republic in the first place) woudn't yield. And so they started in fighting.
George Orwel fought in the brigades, and wrote a book about it, Homage to Catalonia. It's an iteresting rather short read, and he narrates all of this from his first hand experience.

HaHa! Oops, bad typo there. I haven't heard of countries having civil wars before they've been founded!
Yeah, that's really amazing. It just goes to show you that in-fighting can cause even more damage than the enemy. A lot of causes have been lost that way. I remember reading about the Black Guards and Green Armies during the Russian Revolution and Civil War which were basically Anarchist groups that opposed both sides. In the end they were eliminated by the Bolsheviks, but it's really interesting seeing the role they played.
I think that's were it gets hard for some people who attempt to study history, most of the time there's more than just two sides during a war or conflict and everybody is trying to get something out of it. LOL

Oh yeah, the black and green armies are really interesting! I know very little about them, tho. Specially the green.
The early interwar years where really chaotic... Β which reminds me of that austrian dude who joined the whites, proclaimed himself as khan of MongoliaΒ and started killing people until the soviets came arround and killed him... Yeah, if that isn't chaotic I don't know what it is.

Very nice!
One thing, Father Ricardo should have a stole peeking out from under his chasuble. (And maybe even a maniple!)

I actually was referencing an old Catechism where the priest puts the stole underneath his cincture. I think it could be done both ways. but I have seen many Priest wearing the Roman chasuble with the stole showing on the bottom. Father Ricardo's chasuble appears to be shorter I guess.

I was just thinking of what I always see. Going by that catechism, I guess there are some pretty short stoles out there!

Ah, a story about Catholicism that focuses not on the Bible or the saints' lives, but rather on the life of those who took the oath!
I bet this will be a very fun yet fruitful and interesting read.
Your art style has an oldies cartoon look to it that fits its theme well!

I know right, I think that it would be something kinda new because we don't see it very much... sadly even in Catholic film/TV.
Thanks a lot for the complements, they're greatly appreciated!

Your attention to details never fails to impress!Β Great work with the intricate designs on Father Ricardo's robes, and I like how you can tell the individual characters' personalities from their expressions and poses alone.
I totally agree with you about Christians and Catholics being portrayed in the wrong light in secular media (and also Christian media as the "helpless victims").Β There are very few shows and films that show Christians as normal people and not some kind of Jesus character *cough*God's Not Dead franchise*cough* or the "religious nut type."Β I'm hoping to take what I learned at college to make some organic Christian stories, like Lewis and Tolkien.
I'm looking forward to seeing their characters in action in your story!

Aw thanks, Father Ricardo's entire costume nearly drove me crazy! but the others were simple enough. Lol
Christian films are some of the hardest for me to watch... they never seem able to grasp things properly. 'When the game stands tall' starring Jim Caviezel, is labeled by many as a mere football movie but was far more than that. It showed the hardships of our every day lives as we attempt to emulate Christ... what else made it good was that none of the characters were "perfect."... you could relate to them easily.
"organic" Christian storytelling is the best in my opinion.Β You end up having biased individuals, that would scoff at anything religion related, reading your story and actually getting something out of it. YOU GO GIRL!!! Lol

You're welcome!Β lol I always have to simplify costume designs so that I won't get frustrated halfway through and give up.
My parents got so excited over 'War Room' and made me and my sister watch it, which was painful.Β I kind of want to watch it with them again just to point out all the theological flaws and weird Christianity in the Kendrick Brothers movies...Β One of my professors said that a lot of the best "Christian" movies are made by secular people, which is true since they put the story and character-building over beating the audience over the head with the Gospel.
I heard from someone that they had a friend who read the Chronicles of Narnia and loved them, but didn't realize there were allusions to Christianity until they were pointed out.Β I think the organic Christian storytelling is great since anyone can come to the media and enjoy the story and characters for what they are, but the Christian elements are like a secret message to the audience who can decipher it.

Ah yes, "War Room". My Mom kinda did the same thing to me and my younger brother.Β The part were the woman prayed real hard and caused her husband to get sick right before he cheated on her nearly killed me. Lol It's just not the way prayer works. I get exactly what you mean about the Gospel stuff, I have an aunt that when ever there's anything related to Holiness it starts sounding a lot like that.
(Been out since Thanksgiving with the Flu/Colds... it's been "fun" but I'm just starting to get over it. Lol feels good to be back.)

lol It was like weird Christian magic.Β That film came out during my first year at college and one of my professors said that was one of the main things that drew him out of the film.Β If you haven't checked out this channel already, you should watch the Say Goodnight Kevin movie reviews--he did one on War Room and pointed out all the flaws and weird things the Kendrick Bros did and I love it.
Aw man!Β I feel like lots of people got sick over Thanksgiving or this week; everyone around me has been stressing over Finals and trading sleep (and their health) for staying up late and studying.Β I'm trying my best to avoid the germs since I don't want to have the sniffles during my graduation ceremony!

Indeed, "Christian magic" hilarious! Kevin was merciless Lol, but right! Sadly, despite people seeing them as spiritual pillars, the Kendrick Brother films are just "feel good" flicks.
yeah, Lol, me and one of my brothers tried staying in our rooms, but it eventually got me. Being sick at an event like that is always the worst!

I'd be more interested in seeing some biopics like Luther, since the filmmakers wouldn't have to make up a story.
It really is!Β I'd rather get sick over break than during classes though--I got hit by terrible allergies during finals week last semester and it was awful. >.<

There is a lot of awesomeness here! Father Gawe sounds like the type who isn't afraid of anything. I bet he's a comforting sight to the wounded\dyeing knowing that he isn't afraid and is there just for you.
I really love how each one looks different. You can almost imagine their distinct voices just by looking at them. I think my favorite out of the group would have to be Father Ricardo. You did such an awesome job with the vestments.
