Well I usually have 2 options for that, one with Sai and one with Photoshop

With Photoshop,I duplicate the original image layer and then delete the original one and replace it with a transparent layer. I can just select the white background I want to remove then delete it. (i hope this makes sense)

Or with SAI, you have to make sure it's a .png file and when I save there two options (I forgot what they are but i's basically chose if you want it with a white bg or a transparent one) Choose a transparent one.

Bonus: Before I did the options I do in the first two choices, I used to use a website called pixlr editor (i think that was the name) to remove my bgs.
