Description
Despite having been there for several weeks, Ryou was still considered the new kid in school. He had found a niche in his school's theatre group as a member of stage crew, and had made a few friends there. However, most of the school still relegated him as an outsider. It wasn't because Ryou mostly kept to himself, which did nothing to hurt or help his situation. It wasn't because Ryou had major amnesia, which prevented him from remembering anything about his past. It was because Ryou was a mutant. For whatever reason, Ryou possessed the ability to morph his own body into anything he could imagine. While the theatre group accepted this, it made him an outsider in other areas of the school, but he didn't care.If one were to have gone to the local high school on this early Saturday afternoon, then they would have been greeted by the sounds of hammers and power tools hitting wood, as well as the occasional loud crash from falling materials. The High School's Theatre group was building the set for their upcoming show. The ragtag team of builders consisted of Ryou, his friend Takato, their friends Koshiro and Mika, Mika's friends Yui and Mimi, a bunch of younger kids, and Ms. Takiaka, their theatre teacher and director.
"Okay Ryou," Takato told him. "Bring it up and I'll secure it." Ryou flexed his arms, increasing the size of his muscles to twice their original size. He easily lifted a panel of wood that probably weighed close to two hundred pounds, while Takato drilled in screws to secure it into place.
Takato was a simple kid. Until Ryou came along, he didn't really stand out much, despite having been a major player in the theatre. Music was playing in the background.
"Oh yah! I love this song!" Koshiro yelled as a fast beat techno song began to play. Koshiro was known in the group for being the loudest and, as he assured, the most talented. Behind this somewhat inflated ego was a character that would do anything to help his friends. Despite this, him and Takato often competed over the same roles. Suddenly, the song switched to a slower song. Koshiro looked over to the girls of the group, who were controlling the radio from where they were working. "Wow. Jerks!" he yelled in a sarcastic voice.
Mika, along with Yui and Mimi, were painting the panels that Ryou and Takato were putting up.
"That was hardly music." Mika assured. Mika had been Takato's friend since they were both young. She had a cheery personality, and was naturally outgoing, but was known for being sassy. She first met Ryou when he followed Takato to school. When it was just her and Takato later that day, she asked if Ryou was going to be around, even admitting that he was cute.
"What do you guys think?" she asked Ryou and Takato.
"Sure," Ryou said, turning back to his work. The song ended, and an upbeat, jazzy song began to play.
"Oh, I love Sir Duke!" Takato yelled, jumping down from the platform. "Would you care to do dance, miss?" he asked.
"Certainly," she agreed. Takato and Mika held each other and performed a quick dance that Ryou recognized from the previous musical. Ryou looked at them rather jealously as he clenched his enormous fist.
Ever since Ryou first met Mika he had feelings for her. At first he was unable to comprehend them, thinking that his inability to talk was do to something that Mika was doing to him. Recently, he's come to grips with these feelings, but has still been unable to express them.
Then, their director, Ms. Takiaka, walked over to where the group was working, and Takato and Mika were dancing.
"I see that you still remember that dance."
"Yah," Mika said, her cheeks blushing slightly.
Ms. Takiaka was widely considered the oddest, and the kindest teacher in the school. She had a whimsical air to her, and would always help out her favorite students in anyway she could. When she first met Ryou, she took an instant shine to him.
"How is the set coming along?" she asked them
"As long as they get everything painted," Ryou began, "then Takato, Koshiro, and I can finish most of the set today."
"Very good," she said. "Oh yes. I just remembered. For helping out today, you can all have three tickets to give to your families to get into the show for free!"
"Free?" Takato asked? "Are you sure about this?"
"Oh yes. It's just a way of thanking you for coming to school on a Saturday to help with the set." She handed out a group of tickets with a paper clip to everyone who was in the room. Finally, she got to Ryou. "And here's yours Ryou."
"No thanks, Ms. T." he said. "I don't have anyone to give them too. As long as Takato's family comes, I guess I don't need any."
"Ok. If you insist Ryou." Ryou turned around without saying a word, and lifted another large wooden panel onto the set. Mika, Takato, and Koshiro stood there looking at each other.
"You gonna get this, Takato?" Ryou asked him, still without turning around. Takato looked at Mika, who motioned towards Ryou. Takato grabbed the drill and went to secure the panel. They worked for a few minutes in silence, and then Ryou finally said, "Your mom doesn't like me."
"We've been over this," Takato responded. "I don't think she liked that someone we met on the street is currently living with us."
"That's not what I'm talking about. I don't have anyone to come to the show for me."
"My dad and sister will."
"Its not the same. I just wish I could remember something, something about my own family. I don't know who I am. I don't even know if I have a family somewhere out there, or if I even want the one that I may have. But I want to know."
"I get it," Takato said. Ryou shook his head and for the rest of the workday, Ryou was silent.
Later that day, Takato and Ryou were returning home.
"Hi Mom. Hey Dad!" Takato yelled.
"Hi Takato," a woman's voice called from upstairs. "Be right down." Since walking back from the school, Ryou was still silent. Footsteps on the stairs signified Takato's Mom's entrance.
"Hello boys." She said. Takato's mom was somewhat of a taller woman. She still looked fairly young, and had long black hair that had yet to begin to grey.
"Hello Mrs. Miyamoto." Ryou said, still staring blankly.
"Is he okay?" Takato's Mom whispered.
"Yah, he's just a little upset."
"Hello, Ryou. Hello, Takato," said a tall man entering the room.
"Hey Dad!" Takato said. Takato's Dad was also very tall. He had short black hair, but unlike his wife, it was beginning to grey along the edges.
"Hello Mr. Miyamoto." Ryou said again.
"Did you tell him?" Mr. Miyamoto asked his wife.
"I was about to." She responded.
"Tell me what?" Takato asked.
"Not you son. Ryou." Mr. Miyamoto responded.
"Huh?" Ryou looked up.
"There was a blonde girl here asking about you," Mrs. Miyamoto told him. Ryou said nothing.
"What did she want?" Takato asked.
"She didn't say. I told her you weren't here, and she left. She didn't even ask where you were. The way she talked kind of reminded me of you, Ryou."
"What do you mean?" Ryou finally asked.
"She just sounded monotonous and uncaring." She replied.
Ryou said nothing for a minute, and then said…
"I'll be upstairs." Ryou left the room and slumped up the stairs.
"What's wrong with him?" Mr. Miyamoto asked.
"I think he's upset that he doesn't have any real family to come to the show next week."
"To be honest," Mrs. Miyamoto began. "If it was one that he wanted he probably wouldn't have run away. And its not like there are any missing child reports."
"What do you mean, Mom?"
"I'm saying, if he does have a family, its probably not one that he wants to come to the show. It's probably why he ran away."
"Huh…" Takato sighed. "I'm gonna go talk to him." Takato left the room as well. He went up to his room, where Ryou was also living. "Hey Ryou, lets talk." But Ryou was not in the room, and the window was open. "Oh man." Takato said, realizing where he had gone. He rushed down the stairs, and grabbed his helmet ands scooter in the entryway.
"Ryou is walking around by himself. I'm gonna go find him." Takato left his house and headed towards the street. First, he tried up at the school, but Ryou wasn't there. Next, he tried down town.
Ryou was walking along the sidewalk down town. It was a busy day, and dozens of other people were also walking around. Ryou was still sulking.
"I wonder who that girl was?" Ryou asked himself. "It was probably just another agent trying to get me."
"Psst." Ryou heard a whisper come from the alley on his right. "Ryou," he heard the voice say.
"What?" he said. He looked into the alley, and saw a dark figure leaning against the wall. The figure stepped away from the wall. The shadow was revealed as female, one that looked to be a few years older than Ryou. She was tall, with long blonde hair.
"I've been looking for you, Ryou."
"Why have you been looking for me?"
"Why do you think?"
"What? I think its because you work for those agents that try to attack me."
"You mean you don't recognize me?"
"No. And you don't want to mess with me!" The girl said nothing, and just smiled. "What?" Ryou asked, but suddenly, he felt the force of the girl's foot on his face as she kicked him, sending him into the wall behind him. "That's it!" Ryou said. He flexed his arms, increasing the size of his fists to frightening proportions. The girl just looked at him. "You don't seem surprised."
"I'm not. How about you?" The girl flexed her hands, and her fingers extended to form long sword-like blades. An expression of shock shot across Ryou's face. The girl rushed at Ryou, and he blocked the slash of her swords with his enlarged forearms. Ryou shook off the attack by crossing his arms, sending his attacker back across the alley. Ryou's arms morphed again, one become broader and larger, the other becoming a slender weapon, forming a sword and makeshift shield combo. "I see that your powers are getting better," she said. Ryou looked at her. He swung his arm at her, but she crossed both her hers and blocked his attack. Then Ryou bashed her with his shield arm, sending her backwards.
Ryou rushed at her again, ready to strike, but something suddenly grabbed his arm. It was some form of a tendril, and seemed to be coming from his attacker's hair. Another tendril of hair rose into the air, and the tip morphed into a sharp dagger point. The blade glinted in the sun, and the girl sent it flying towards Ryou, who only just managed to block the attack with his shield. However, the blade turned back into hair and grabbed Ryou's shield arm, completely trapping him. The girl then whipped the tendrils, sending Ryou against the wall and pinning him against the wall. The girl walked up to Ryou without an emotion on her face. She raised another tendril of hair, which quickly morphed into a blade.
Ryou looked at the blade as his attacker raised it above her head.
"Okay, I'm bored," the girl said, lowering the blade.
"What?" Ryou asked in shock.
"It was fun at first, but then it just got boring. You've gotten good though."
"What?" Ryou asked again, even more confused.
"When we used to fight it was never even close. But I see that you've gotten better." The girl released Ryou from her grip.
"Can you please tell me what the hell is going on?" Ryou snapped.
"Do you really not know who I am?" she asked.
"No. I don't have any memory of anything other than the last few months," Ryou almost shouted at he.
"Oh, Ryou!" she said, suddenly embracing him and her voice showing its first sign of emotion.
"Uh," Ryou stuttered. "Can, can you at least tell me who you are?"
"I'm your sister," she said. Ryou's eyes widened in surprise.
"Ryou!" Takato yelled as he rode down the street on his scooter. He had been searching for Ryou for about an hour, and had still yet to find him. He was riding down town when he finally spotted Ryou sitting on a bench in the park. "Ryou!" he yelled.
"Oh. Hey Takato."
"I've been looking for you for an hour. Where have you…" It was then that Takato noticed the girl sitting next to him. "Is this the girl that was looking for you?"
"Yah."
"Hey. I'm Ren." She said. Takato was surprised at how similar her voice sounded to Ryou's.
"So, who is she?"
"She's my sister," Ryou answered.
"I didn't know you had a sister."
"I didn't either."
"Anyways," Ren began. "I'm glad that I found you. You must continue to develop your powers. I have to keep moving."
"What?" Ryou asked. "But I have questions. What are our parents like? Where are they? Why do we have these powers?"
"I'll answer your questions next time we meet, but I need to go." She stood up from the bench, ready to leave.
"Wait!" Ryou said. He looked at Takato "Can you at least come to our show next weekend."
"I don't know, Ryou. We'll see. Now I have to go. I'll see you later." She turned and walked away.
"Bye…" Ryou said.
"I'm sorry, man." Takato said.
"Whatever." Ryou muttered. "Let's go home."
The next week was the opening week of the show. Ryou was dressed in black, was wearing a headset for communications, and was holding a clipboard, making sure that everyone was where they needed to be.
"Koshiro, are your props set? We don't want a repeat of Wednesday."
"Set and waiting." Koshiro replied.
"Excellent. Takato, costume change placed?"
"Yes sir." Takato yelled back.
"How am I doing, Ryou," Mika asked.
"Oh, uhm, you're doing… great," he stuttered. Mika giggled and walked off as Ryou breathed a sigh of relief.
It was at that time that one of the freshmen on stage crew came in the door handing out flowers from family and friends to the cast and crew.
"Hey, Ryou," Takato called. "We got one from my parents."
"Cool," Ryou said, sounding uncaring.
"Are you okay?" Takato asked.
"She's not here," Ryou replied.
"Who's not here? Your sister?"
"Yah. I just looked into the audience, and I didn't see her." Takato nodded his head solemnly.
"Here you go, Ryou," the freshman handing out flowers said. "One for you too."
"Really?" Ryou took the flower and immediately looked at the note.
Good Luck- Ren…
A small smile broke across Ryou's face. He rushed for the door but was stopped by Takato.
"I have to go see her!" he said, trying to fight his way past. "Just a minute!"
"Not now," Takato replied, pushing him back. "We have work to do. She'll be there at the end."
"Okay." Ryou said.
A few hours later, the show was over, and the cast was in the atrium of the school to meet the audience. As they entered, there was a cheer for their brilliant performance. But that was unimportant to Ryou. In the corner of the room stood a tall, long blonde haired girl.
"Ren!" Ryou shouted as he ran over to her, just stopping himself from hugging her.
"Hey, Ryou."
"I'm glad you came."
"Yah, there's a reason I did. Look Ryou, I know you have a lot of questions. But I have to ask. How good are you at using your powers?"
"I don't know. Pretty good I guess. Not as good as you, but good. Why?"
"Then I'm gonna need to help you train."
"Hold on," Ryou said. "I thought you were gonna answer my questions."
"Okay, I will," she said. "But I need your help."
"With what?"
"Ryou. Our family is in trouble."
