NOTE: This deviation does involve some minor Side Order spoilers, as in stuff as after the first tower and tutorial. Nothing major, no talk of the final boss or post final boss. Even I haven't gotten to that latter one just yet. Don't worry.
SO, SO. Or, Side Order. Da Splatoon 3 DLC that came hot off the heels of the worst Splatfest we've ever had. Like, seriously. That last one was PAINFUL from the theme alone. Glad this came at the right time. And so far? I think it's good...with a lot of caveats. It's nice that we got another shakeup of the Splatoon story mode formula when RoTM felt like a Diet Octo Expansion. We a rougelike now! And overall it's super fun. Keeps you playing, very addictive. The Chip system is SUPER cool and can lead to some absolutely busted setups if you can build it right. Pro tip: Focus on upgrades for the Pearl Drone and get Booyah Bomb as your special as soon as you can. The sheer invincibility frames you get can be a lifesaver on harder runs. And, of course, Off the Hook. The outright flirt in this one, you literally CANNOT tell me otherwise. And not to spoil the story but it's honestly not bad. Much like OE, SO feels light on actual STORY...but the lore is pretty cool. I prefer the Dev Diaries over the chatlogs from OE and AGAIN not to spoil but I appreciate they considered us being annoying by one thing they could have done with Marina and just getting it out the way in the first act.
So, what's the problem? WELL...there's not a lot of game. They really were expecting the "randomised" structure to carry it because the amount of content is kinda...small. There are a handful of map layouts, only a few are big and sprawling like OE's were, and actual objectives are minimal. Splat Zones, return of the Eight Balls, destroy portals, destroy reskinned Octo-Kooks, reverse Tower Control, boss fight. Das it. At least they removed the failure states for returning objectives, so no more dying to a Ball catching a stray projectile and sailing into the abyss, thank fuck. And it's not like there's NOTHING. You still get twelve new weapons (OE gave you one) and the enemy and boss selection is pretty unique and varied. It just gets a little tedious after a while. And sometimes the DLC just pulls something evil to screw you over. Like, sometimes a floor is so dark you can't see. Sometimes it's covered in enemy ink so you can't move. And if the game is feeling REALLY shitty, it'll do BOTH at the same time. That's a run-ender, right there. Also, fuck those flying sprinkler enemies. They're the Flyfish of Side Order and I hate them, I hate them so much. It's a damn shame because there are genuine improvements over OE and RoTM and I don't HATE it or anything. It's just like a lot of Splatoon 3 where a pretty solid foundation is brought down by some utterly BAFFLING design choices. Also, like S3 it's a total fucking grind. Thought replaying the final boss nine times to unlock Hero gear in S2 was bad? Try completing TWELVE SEPARATE SUCCESSFUL RUNS just for the weapons. And a successful run is anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Oof.
Actually, small aside. After playing through SO I came to one conclusion, and it's kind of a messy one; Deep Cut kinda suck. For all their diversity and representation and stuff, they're just kinda boring and super annoying. The Squid Sisters and ESPECIALLY Off the Hook were written so much better, the latter almost exclusively because they head the DLC, but, still. The problem is that Callie, Marie, Pearl and Marina are still kinda funny on their own. Frye, Big Man and ESPECIALLY Shiver were only really given life in the story mode and fanworks. As idols, they're just...so annoying. The whole "HAHA INKOPOLIS SCUM AMIRTIE" thing is, well I've already ranted about that but truth be told I hate it. I hate it, I hate them and I'm sick of all of it.
Anyway, after getting through a lot of Side Order, I have come to the conclusion that people ship Pearl, Marina and Achtf1sh as a polycule. They must. And why not? Pearl has two hands, after all. That's two more hands than Agent 4 has actual representation in this franchise. That sucks. At least we finally have Side Order models baybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Well, we have Achtf1sh and Pearlbot right now, but hey, that's good! No major spoilers yet...one hopes. Hope we see more of 'em soon tho! As much as I adore Seal's S2 dupes of the S3 designs, having the proper models would be EVEN BETTER...aaaaaaaaaaaaas long as they're a good port. I.e. not the Alterna Squid Sister models...[shudder] Hell we still don't have any Casual Deep Cut models yet.
