IDW: Okay, so to celebrate our new addtion to our comic lineup, we have decided to add in a new character for the comic series! Say hello to Tangle the Lemur, everyone! What do you think?Some Fans: Huh, she's pretty cool. I mean we did want the Freedom Fighters but we will remain hopeful they will return one day. We just hope the writers can do this character justice.
Some Other Fans: LIGHT UP THEM THERE TORCHES AND RAISE YOUR PITCHFORKS AND CROSSES, PEOPLES. WE MUST BURN THIS HEATHEN AT THE STAKE BEFORE SHE BECOMES A TOY TO BE SOLD TO THE YOUNGINS!

So...yep. Brand new character, say hello to Tangle! A Ring-Tailed Lemur that apparantly loves to fight and get into...well, a Tangle. I remain pretty inconclusive on the IDW comics, partly because it feels like an Archie Sonic Tribute Band sticking ever closer to the video games rather than the clean slate it SHOULD be, but Tangle was revealed to the masses and I think...yeah, girl's got potential. No she won't replace Sonic or Sally, or Amy for you crazy SonAmy shippers, she is...for now at least, a character. I'll wait to see her in action BEFORE I pass much judgement.
Amusingly, I've seen the argument that Tangle is only a thing to either piss off Sally Acorn/Freedom Fighter fans, or just to make another action figure to sell to the peoples. Even though, NO Comic character has had that happen to them. None of them. The only characters in all of the franchise that were introduced in the past six years that have gotten toys made of them are Sticks, Zavok and Infinite. Maybe Burn Bot too, if you count him. I don't feel like Tangle was made EXPLICITELY to taunt Freedom Fighter Fans, at least not from IDW's side of it. If anything, I can see Tangle becoming a sort of "psuedo-mascot" for the sub-series like Sally was for Archie and Sticks became for Boom. She'll probablly not appear in the games like Sticks, unless the IDW comics really ARE closer to the games than we thought, so for the most part her inclusion will not harm the games that much.
Trust me, that shitshow doesn't NEED any help sawing its own legs off.
As for the image...well, that pose, though. I don't even know, I'm not even sure if that's possible or not. Also if the lines on her head look wrong its because her head was the wrong size and I shrunk it a bit. Drawing her was a bit of a struggle, as it kind of always is on tablet, but I think I did well. I suppose all that's left is to sit back and see how fast the fetish art rolls in...
...Oh wait, I disabled that shit with a third-party plugin years back. Eh. Also, shippers, I expect a full Sonic x Tangle image by next week. GO!

I agree that this should be a clean slate first and foremost. I heard IDW has a knack for revisiting old threads to give them closure, but considering every other Sonic product is its own thing they might as well not bother with continuity yet. That said, this girl never seemed like a replacement for Sally to me, since it's not like the old SatAM/Freedom Fighter storylines have been considered for years now. Those old characters had their chance, I say let the new ones shine at whatever it is they plan to do. Tangle herself looks alright and maybe she'll bring something new to the table, but I'm waiting for the first writing mistakes to see how the writers handle her.

You don't know if that will happen for sure.Β IDW has notΒ given an official statement onΒ whether or not they will be in the new comics.Β I think we need to wait for that instead of jumping to conclusions based on a new character reveal.

It's alright, this is all speculation in the meantime. I'd probably look this up anyway even if it wasn't what it seemed like, on the grounds that I'm curious about how IDW will handle a Sonic comic. I really can't say much about Tangle herself, but at the very least I can make a prediction that she'll be able to keep up with Sonic in her own way. It's okay if I'm wrong about it too, it's not like I'm an authority on these things anyway.

That would be the best course of action at this point, really. If they do show up in the comics after all, that's no guarantee that they'll be the same anyway.

The problem is that I don't feel like SEGA cared much for the FF even during the SATAM days. If they were transplated into the comics for no other reason then because the fans want them to, how shoddy and flanderised would they get in time? Shadow and Metal Sonic were transplanted into Boom due to fan popularity and look at how butchered they became. Well, one of them, anyway.
I like Tangle's design. It's a new species, though some are saying it's a little close to another character from Archie, but I'm going to wait and see what she's like in the comics before I place any higher judgement. I'm not getting my hopes up, because I did with Sticks and it bit me in the ass.

That's likely because SatAM wasn't made by Sega themselves, like so many other alternative works at the time. So the flanderization would set in rather quickly because the different writers wouldn't understand what made the original material work. This is hardly limited to SatAM, pretty much every other Sonic game with a pretense of continuity suffered from this. Really, at this point it's easier to say that these works aren't connected at all and the characters may as well be rewritten from the ground up every time.
That's for the best, setting expectations too high will only disappoint you. I remember feeling that way about Marine once when I seriously thought she'd be some kind of Tails counterpart to Blaze, which was stupid as the real character was anything but that. Sticks was alright to me, but then I've learned not to expect too much out of Sonic characters by now anyway.

I think Tangle is nice, especially her power of using her tail as a weapon or a third hand.
As for Sally and the freeomΒ fighters not appearing, I cannot say because I don't know if they are going to appear or not since IDW did not give an official statement on the topic.
