This is amazing! I love how accurate you got her. That skirt I am really jealous of. Love how you figured out how to make it frill but not be bulky like a barbie dress.Β

The secret to non-bulky doll clothes is lace-weight yarn and a small hook. (This kills the carpal tunnel.)

The use of roving for the hair is great; using lengths of "normal" yarn would've just looked all scraggly and unkempt, which ill befits the character. Is it woven/stitched into place, or is it glued?

Those huge eyes definitely maximize the cuteness factor, though I feel they're maybe slightly too wide-set? Might just be the angle of the photo making it look that way.

Do you write your own patterns down or do you kind of make them up as you go along? The fanciest thing I ever crocheted was a fish, following a pattern, so I'm always a bit wowed when people make their own designs from scratch. I would have messed it up so many times, and definitely would not have got it to turn out symmetrical at all.

Thank you for the critique!Β

To answer your questions: the roving is stitched and then felted into place. It's probably the angle of the photo, because I don't think the eyes look that far apart in person. I write patterns down when I have the time and inclination, but mostly they're memorized.

This is so amazing how you can just think up a crocheting pattern by yourself to make a doll like this.
I think it represents sailor moon very well
Also I like how you did the hair.
So I think the doll can't be much better,
but the photo could have some improvement,
I find the wrinkles in the white fabric you used as background a little bit distracting.
Also the light situation is not optimal in my opinion.
Here there seems to be only one light source from the upper end of the picture.
That makes some shadows in the middle and bottom part of the figure.
Maybe you could try with several lamps or different directions for the light.
But the figure itself is still perfect great work!!

What a great piece! All the details work very well together and you did very well on material choice of all the different components. One suggestion I have though is that the picture seems to be taken at a slightly askew angle (not front the front, but slightly above. This makes the neck and bow area a bit darker and distracts a bit from your work.Β

Beside that I am very impressed with your work. I couldn't crochet to save my life, but yours looks super neat.

Can you suggest any tips for taking better pictures with a smartphone?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BellaGBear In reply to MasterPlanner [2018-05-14 18:12:59 +0000 UTC]

oh that's a tough one. Some things that work with me is make a picture in daylight (experiment whether direct sun or or not works best for yout phone). Also it sometimes helps to use a flashlight orso to make better pictures. Sometimes the flashlight on my phone even works better than the flash . And your phone might have setting as well to play with contrast and light and such.Β

This is adorable! Are those tinny little buttons on her socks? If so that would be the cutest thing! I love the staff and head band, they look really good!

My one critique with this picture is that the background is a bit wrinkled, which tends to take my focus off of the subject. Maybe try using a piece of white paper or cardboard instead of a piece of fabric? Other than that I think the photo looks great though.

Keep up the good work!

Okay, so wool roving is kinda like loose wool then? That's pretty neat, it works well as doll hair.

Sorry I haven't had much to report on your order. Between the ongoing fights with management, double shifts at work, broken felting needles, a possible stomach flu, and just plain waiting on packages of wool to arrive...

But I know what I'll be doing this weekend, and I have a few more color palettes for you to approve.
