Description
Oi, I'll probably delete this later... I really didn't intend upon posting it in the first place XD But I'm trying to beef up my gallery... so there.Something of a long rant coming up... would you like to:
-Skip ahead to comments (recommended).
-Read rant, then continue to comments (at least 10GB of available space required).
So anyway... not having a job sucks... looking for a job sucks even more x__x; Today I went job hunting AGAIN after a somewhat spirited conversation with my parents >_> Applying (for many, the second time) to just about every store in Concord.. and finally I brought myself to apply at Walmart... Now, to many of you, that might not sound so bad... but our Walmart is one of those open-24-hours-super-store-this-place-never-gets-cleaned-ever kind of Walmarts... And it attracts just the BEST people in Concord... you know, moms who buy 4 packs of cigarettes and a box of diapers while they're at it... but then puts the diapers back when they realize they're 20 cents short...? Or people who stuff their 600 pound ass into a scooter-cart and sit in the middle of the aisle while sorting through their very many competitor coupons for hostess cupcakes and oh! DIET soda...? Or how about the people who try to bust past the front doors with a full cart of unpaid merchandise?
Now granted, not everyone who shops at Walmart is like that, obviously... but you see what I'm trying to say...
Point is, our Walmart is a last resort for employment as far as I'm concerned... But that's where I'm at nowadays... so I gave it a shot x___x; So anyway... they have these little kiosks that you fill in the application on a computer... and I filled in all the info... pretty basic... Then it got to this "assessment" part, which is a series of questions rating your behavior at work, how you deal with customers and employees, and your work ethic... which as anyone who has applied at most retail stores recently could tell you, is pretty standard.
The questions are really common sense, common courtesy type questions... You know, "How often in a day do you take unauthorized breaks?" or "How often do you leave work early without supervisor permission?" or "How would you deal with an angry customer? Would you A) Ignore them. B) Pass them off to your supervisor. C) Try to find out what is wrong and help them." And for all intensive purposes, I answered them all "correctly". Despite this, however, this is what the screen said after I completed the assessment [paraphrased].
"You completed, but did not pass the assessment. Your application will not be considered at this time. You may try again in 60 days".
And all I could think about was "You mean that that jackass up front that took 10 minutes to ring through two items because he was probably still stoned from his break half an hour before passed the assessment and I didn't? T__T;" But I also was somewhat relieved... because this means that I am actually UNABLE to work at Walmart
Anyway... that's quite enough of me x_x;
-Enjoy~
*EDIT*: Resubmitted with a small border to avoid cropping issues when printed... (Still only available in 5x7 however)

As an employee there, I've noticed:
1. they're always intentionally understaffed
2. if whatever skeleton crew DOES manage to complete their tasks on a regular basis, then they're looked upon as being overstaffed and management cuts people
3. a lot of employees that work there know that W is (one of) the cheapest out there and therefore they don't have to do quality work, since there will always be customers who are cheapwads
4. candidate B types are highly likely to be temporary anyway and candidate A types are more likely desperate to put food on the table - easier to manipulate, doesn't actively think as much
5. W also loves hiring folks that don't speak much English, for appearances of being diverse
6. the only worthwhile benefits are for full time people, but fat chance of ever reaching full time

Everything you just said is the exact same thing I've either observed first-hand or people who have worked there have told me. ._.
Some time after posting this, I got a job with an inventory company that audits Walmarts (RGIS if you've heard of it). All of our policies and counting techniques directly rely on the amount of preparation the store receives prior to the inventory. And WHO preps the store? The sales floor associates. And WHO gets the least amount of training before the audit? The sales floor associates!
We had store managers telling people how to prep an area, knowing full well the info they were giving their employees was crap. Then, they'd have to go through and re-prep an entire dept. before we could count it.. And WHO would get blamed if the audit took too long? You guessed it! The sales floor associates!
Ugh. Not that the company I worked for was much better, but I definitely wouldn't want to work for ole' Wally World. >_<

lmao, I know what u mean... I filled out a walmart app last year when i was out of a job and they said the same thing... I was epically pissed, but yet glad. People at my walmart (in Moline, IL) always look miserable to be working there. I now work at the Great Escape theaters, across the street from the previously-applied-to WalMart, and everytime i go to work, I think 'Nyah! I'd rather give my soul to the concession demons at the theater ANY day!' I love my current job... free movie once a week, YAYZ!
Tho... today i was shopping at walmart and some old lady thought i worked there...asked me where we kept the candles... >_<
And we do get b*tchy people in concession too... "Can't you do anything about your prices?" "...No, ma'am, the ticket prices goes to the film studios, the theater itself only makes money in concession, so they charge those crazy prices." "well who'd buy a small popcorn for $4.75 a bag, or a small pop for $4.25?" They usually say this as they're handing me their money, so apparently, they do. But I'm like u... too nice/pussy to point that out. And we get people who say I shorted them on their change... happened the other day, she held up a huge line of people- i was the only concessionist- and she made my manager count my drawer to see who was right- me or her... Turns out, after a 15 minute wait, that I was right all along. Figures. And the crazy people who have to talk to all of my managers for a good hour, asking about our security and whether we have bouncers or guards there at all during the day (wtf?we're a theater, we don't have guards period, and the ushers are the bouncers....they're usually evil enough to kick underage kids outta the movies they sneak into and that's it) because she feels threatened. "Well, maybe you should go to the police, ma'am." "No, no, I've seen too much, I can't trust the police!"..... -_- What are we, an assassin's guild? gah.
Wow, sorry to verbally puke all over your comment page. My bad. Basic thing here. I had the same thing happen... made me go O_O'
U made me LOL again. Gonna have to devWATCH you!

Guys, altough I really understand your points, etc. But I would like to point out that its not easy if you have to make the decission who to hire as a worker. If you have to turn people down because of some of the reasons mentioned here, its not easy. For example being overqualified. Sorry, but that really means you're just too good to get that job. It just means that they wouldnt be able to afford such a good workforce. You wouldn't be able to grow in your job and eventually turn out as the first applicant. And once a job has been awarded to someone, yeah, no way you can say the other person "ow yeah, you're not really hired altough I told you so".

lol... so true. I haven't been desperate enough to apply at wal*mart...yet...but if I do, I'm sure I'll be out-done by some squat hobbit reject with arthritis and 3 kids at home unsupervised. Having worked as a cashier/customer service assoc. I definitely wish I worked at some of the places I shopped as I wait in line with my eye twitching at the sloth behind the register thinking "please just MOVE SO I CAN DO YOUR JOB 200X FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT!"

Firstly, your art style is hot, funny, and energenic. I'm shocked that I haven't stumbled upon you until now. Secondly, I feel your pain. I currently have a job at Baskin Robbins, but because winter is upon us I have to find another part time job to keep the money flowing in until I get hired at the company where I'm interning. They say they're looking to hire in December but I'm not going to put all of my eggs in one basket. Ironically enough, of all of the redundant applications that I've had to fill out for most major stores, WalMart's was the shortest and easiest. No electronic aplications here.

Yeah, I've been through the Wal-Mart experience. And you've pretty much got it down pat here lol. In a way it's good, because it's like "Yeah, it's a job. But it's almost a cult. Do you REEEEALLY want to work here?"

To answer your thoughs 'Master Rambler' Yes. Nearly everyone in the world is crazy. but you already knew that.
I've had someone come through my checkout and bought 4 boxes of alcomahol and baby formual (For the milk whatsaa ma) not having enough money; they put back the formual.
So...... being the good person I am, I abused them ^.^"
I lost my job for it...
But I got my point out(:
Well. You will probably hear from me again in the next 2 years or so when I remember your art work.
Thank you for making my day.

I. Hate. WAL-MART!!!! I worked there last year, overnights, part-time (trying to be full time, but they aparently didn't need me there even though they were short on people >.< ). It was horrible! That was when my health went downhill because of the stress (seizures). My mom wanted me to quit, but I had a cell phone bill to worry about. Thankfully my boyfriend (now husband ^_^) got me a job at Dominos the same night I quit because an assistant manager got mad and bitched me out for answering my boyfriends question about whether or not he should buy a truck (which only took 2 minutes tops) while other people had visitors that stayed all night long >.< Oh well, no more 10pm-7am shifts for me ^^ Stay. Away. From. Evil. WAL-MART!!!
Sorry for the rant...
