Hiccup and the Snoggletog Gifts: Part 10

Narrator: As Hiccup finally unwound the piece of parchment that Astrid had given him as a Snoggletog present, the red-haired viking smiled in delight!

(happily surprised):”Astrid!! ---- A watercolor portrait of … me?! You ---- How did you? ---- I didn’t know you …. you could paint?!”

(nudging with an elbow):”I CAN’T paint, silly! I got Master Rohan to paint it for you.”

(glancing at portrait with smile):”You commissioned a portrait of me?!”

:”Well, he DID say it wasn’t one of his best …. but that he did the best he could on such short notice.”

Narrator: Turning the paper portrait so that he could see it better by the firelight, Hiccup studied the caricature of himself as he said,

:”This is …. Wow! I don’t know --- I don’t know what to …. say.”

:”You say, ‘Thank you,’ you dopey viking.”

(big cheesy grin and hug):”Thank you, Astrid! This really means the world to me!”

Narrator: While Hiccup carefully rolled the piece of parchment back up, Astrid eyed the icy trees that rose behind them.

(shivering):”So why do you like to come out here ….. to this place?”

Narrator: Hiccup looked up at the first twinkling stars of the evening and then at the glassy sea shimmering below.

:”I guess mostly because it is so quiet …. and the stars and sea are so beautiful. There’s always something to see … like ---- THERE! A shooting star!”

Narrator: Both vikings looked up with wonder on their faces as the shooting star swiftly streaked across the sky and disappeared.

:”You know, Hiccup; you’re such an unusual viking. You look at the world so differently than the rest of the villagers ….. and.... and ….. I love that about you. Don’t ever change.”

Narrator: Not quite certain how to respond to Astrid's comment, Hiccup secured the scroll under his coat and beamed a smile at her.

:”Hey, would you like to stay out here a bit longer and watch the rest of the stars come out?”

Narrator: Thinking for a moment, Astrid replied with a shiver,

:”Well ---- I probably should go ----"

:"There's no moon out tonight, so we'll be able to see lots of stars!"

:"Well ----- "

:"And we might even see more shooting stars! And that's good luck, right?"

:"Well .... .... Okay. But do you mind if I lean against you …. to … to stay warm, of course?”

(giving a little bow):”It would be an honor, milady.”

Narrator: And as the sky filled with a sea of stars, two vikings sat quietly in the cold, nuzzled against each other in the sweet bliss of heart-felt companionship, watching the host of the heavens slowly journey across the sky.
