Description
One day, as Master Rohan sat relaxing near the beach taking in a brief moment of peace, Hiccup, wearing an oversized coat and various pirate-esque accoutrement, suddenly burst out of some nearby bushes.(pirate voice): "Arg, Matey! I'm Hiccup the viscious sword-wielding pirate who's come to commandeer ye galleon! Surrender ye ship or I'll not go easy on ye!"
:"
Where did you get that outfit?!":"Arg! What be so funny ye scallywag?! I'm about to run ye through with this here sword!"
"
Oh, *clears throat* sorry Mister Viscious Pirate. You just startled me, and I didn't know how to respond.":"Us tricksy pirates like sneaking up on people, and you'd best be givin' me whats I wants, or I'll be makin' ye walk the plank!"
:"Well, *chuckle* Mister Pirate, I'm .....I'm just having a hard time believing that....that something as innocent-looking as YOU is a ruthless pirate! I mean, you're as scary as a stuffed animal brandishing a plastic spoon!
":"Arg! That be where ye be wrong, Matey!" *taps Master Rohan in the shoulder armor with his sword*
(faking): "Ouch!! Oh you hurt me!"
(switching back to regular voice):"Oh, I'm so sorry! So sorry! Here----are you bleeding?! I didn't mean to---"
(masterfully swiping HIccup's sword right out of Hiccup's hand): "Gotcha!"
(surprised but chuckling):"Yeah, you did......arg."
(over to the side):"HAHAHAHAHA! What a LOOSER!"
(arcing the sword inches from Tuffnut's nose): "Play nice. You're still on restriction; remember?"
: ^^') "Arg."
:"ARG!"
:"ARGGG!!!"

And ha, I had it comin'.... oh gads that game.... Quite enjoyable as I recall.... just gotta switch off the voices when/if I go back to it.
And SERIOUSLY. I think you hit the nail right on the head. The hero is like.... probably the last of his kind, and SOME kind of animal follows him around, and he gathers a motley crew of people with tragic pasts, and then they all meet the mysterious girl who's "good at magic".... and plenty of other such nonsense.

Your description is perfect, and this formula must work or else its variations wouldn't be used over and over in games, movies, tv, comic books, runes, cave man paintings, etc.
By the way, I'm actually playing (when I have a moment! HA!) a game called Dragon Age and I love it! It matches the description of above very well and has such a Lord of the Rings/Fantasy Realm feel. It's a free roam world with a central plot line that changes as you make decisions along the way but has a nice blend of dialogue/cut scenes/action/hack hack hack. You're also able to turn down the gore in the settings, because I'm not into gore.
But I have to be careful if I'm playing the game with Hiccup in the room. Occasionally you may run across a dragon, and it's kill or be killed by it. And I think he might cry if he sees me kill a dragon.
(nervously noticing that a dragon is about to pounce): "Hey Hiccup, I need you to run to town for me.....and get me some.....eggs. Yes! We need more eggs for breakfast, okay, here's some cash (tosses money haphazardly at Hiccup)."
:"Um...okay....but you just sent me to get eggs like an hour ago."
:"WE NEED MORE! GO!"

I just spent two hours (that I should've been working on art or clean up the top of the tree that snapped off yesterday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm and is now sprawled out in my front yard) playing the game and it's gotten better.
Another cool thing about the game is that you can change the difficulty during gameplay. So early on, I kept dying and dying even though I had it set to normal difficulty, and I was thinking about just abandoning the game; then I discovered the nifty little feature in the options menu and voila, the battles were actually winnable!
One last freaky thing is that the main character resembles my viking self, which gave me a bizarre start when I popped it in last week. Of course, like any good DND style game, you can alter your character's appearance, so I gave mine extremely high upturned eyebrows. I chuckle inside just about every cutscene because he looks like he's giving a really sad-pathos face to the people he's talking to.
My character in a puffy-lipped voice: "Please don't attack us. Pleeeeeease. Purty pleeeeeease. Dang they pulled out their swords! Okay team, ATTACK!"

Hmmm... there is something just so wrong about Hiccup trying to be a pirate- you catch the incongruity of this very, very well.
And I pity you. You can't get any break without those guys harassing you. I see you have to wear armor even when you're trying to relax.
The pirate speech was very good- it's like you visited the How To Talk Like a Pirate. com website!

I thought such incongruity would make for a funny picture even though the second book is called How to be a Pirate (he doesn't actually become a pirate in the book; it's just "pirate" training).
