500th Deviation posted! Sort of...

I am upset. The kids in my area growing up did not get this show on the TV. Man, did I miss out. This is up there as one of the best animated shows of that era in the USA. There are scenes that animators just do not do anymore traditionally. The camera panning up and spinning around the body as the character rotates. Going forward along the surface of a planet and none of the terrain is replicated as it grows from the horizon and passes the viewer. Three layer shading that is usually reserved for movies. This show looks as good as Transformers The Movie which came out two years afterwards. In fact I think this beat Transformers on TV by a few months. The only negative I can think of is the name of the main villain is Umbra. Nigh 40 years later I keep hearing "Hum, bra?" instead. But still Umbra looks like it could actually give Unicron a great battle. Hrmmm.

A quick, abridged history lesson. This show was actually made for the USA and then dubbed for Japan. Quick side note, this super robot should have been included in my 80s Mecha Wallpaper project. Doh! The money for this show came from America, but the talent is Japanese headed by the man who directed Astro Boy and a ton of anime in the 1970s-1990s. Oh yeah. He also worked on Bionic Six. Another beautiful cartoon. Why didn't this show stick like Voltron and other super robot shows? Probably thanks to Tonka. At that time they had Gobots. Somehow they convinced a court that Mighty Orbots could be confused with Gobots: Mighty Robots, Mighty Vehicles. Also Mighty Orbots was very similar to God Mars from Japan. A toy made by Bandai who licensed their designs to Tonka to make Gobots. It is a shame the creators gave up and we didn't get a true Mighty Orbots toy (there is a knock off out there). This show even had an ending to the story arc of the season! Unheard of in the days of pumping out endless toy commercials.

As for this drawing. This is obviously based on the quick scene from the intro that shows us Bo and Boo. The intro, the first episode and one other scene has these two dancing. So I knew that was where I wanted to go with this. It was either that or battle scenes. I even paid attention to Bo and Boo's heights. Multiple times it shows Bo is slightly taller than Boo. Which makes one wonder about the super robot form since they are both of it's arms. Is one arm longer? I also had to decide on their colors. Different episodes had them with varying tints or darkness. And then there is Ohno. I eventually decided I wanted to add her into this piece as I watched more episodes. She was supposed to be a quick draw up and pasted in as she has little detail. Of course it didn't end up being that way. Mistakes were made! I did change up her design. But that is a discussion for her own posted drawing.
