well i have no idea about maya, never seen the interface before, but if it has an "advance" box in the final gather rollout and "FG point interpolation" box inside the advance box u can try some tips, try "Use Radius Interpolation Method" and feel free to start with some values, maybe u can use a simple scene as an experiment, the rest is just use a draft preset on FG setting...

some things about 3d max that i really like is the help and tutorial section, they not just mention us with text, it also has pictures to help us understanding something, first time i understand basics about FG and GI was from there, have u ever visit mymentalray.com ? i'm sure u'll gonna have alot off things to learn from, becouse i saw alot of maya users there...
