I love this! I really appreciate all the minor details put into it. The pose and character are really great.

I do like adding small details just for the heck of it and I do tend to exaggerate with them. I'm happy you like it.

Lol, no, its a generic Cthulhu idol. The idea behind the post apocalyptic background is that old gods have returned, or something like that.

Ok that´s what I generally meant, just didn´t know if Cthulhu wasn´t a city...and of course I needed to wise-ass around so I couldn´t just ask:"Dat pic got summin tadoo with da Kthooloo?"

Most of his bibliography is short stories and I think you can find some of them online as free ebooks. I also know there are audio books with his stories. Here is a list with his stories: [link]

Yeah,my book also´s a collection of short stories..Alonso Typer,Innsmouth Clay and stuff.

And Lovecraft´s notes on writing "phantastic stories",including a collection of shortly scribbled down ideas for stories, collected over years....

EPIC WIN !!!

Indeed it is. Makes you wonder why Hollywood does all the crappy remakes to already old and overused movies and doesn't do something with "The mountains of Madness" (for example).

The games,that is?

I haven't played the game but I've seen the movie

TheSangson In reply to MatesLaurentiu [2012-02-19 17:17:52 +0000 UTC]

That´s exactly the opposite of what I wanted to hear...
As far as I know from others, the movie´s quite a good horror movie but it´s NOTHING compared to the deep, nearly painful fear you´ll expect throughout the games..they´re REALLY heavy stuff, made with professional help by psychologists to produce the maximum nerve-racking density possible.
The movie´s just a collection of the good stuff from the first three games wildly patched together, loosely following the story of the first part but unnecessesarily alternating it in a more mainstream-compatible way. With the Soundtrack completely taken from part one and two, there´s NOTHING in the movie that´s written FOR the movie.

Anyway I started the series with the second part, then chronologically and even the second one already made me totally immune against ANY kind of horror story,be it a movie or a book.Nothing can frighten me except SILENT HILL.
Which,in part two, depending on which end you unlock, reveals that it somehow,in a mysterious way,is related to the OLD ONES...
The only thing ever coming NEAR SLIGHTLY spooking me since I played those games was some of Lovecraft´s work, but especially things that just stay mysterious till the end..that´s what got me asking you about SiLenT HIlL.
Silent Hill lets you finish the whole game without revealing what the heck is actually the reason for what´s going on there...OR IF IT´S GOING ON AT ALL....
You can only find out by really thinkin around corners, reading between the lines, interprete the spooky overtones and insinuations...in other word´s SILENT HILL is lovecrafty hardcore-horror for the 21st century...that´s why I´m preaching about it so hard.

I can only recommend you to get yourself a used PS2 somewhere and play those games (part one is ignorable, has less athmo than the PS2 parts)you can not regret this believe me.
Only, one shouldn´t play those games with a heart disease, near pregnant women, older people or people with a known psychosis in their history.
Sounds like "yo,THAT´s how AWESOME the game is,bro!",but I´m dead serious about that.
And that´s not because the game were SO bloody or shocking or something,it´s more that the games instantly create constant background fear, you mostly can´t even detect where exactly that comes from,it´s just SUCH a dense, oppreively heavy athmosphere, the EVIL tricks of the producers pointed right at your subconscious mind (the sound alone KILLS you,and you don´t exactly know why)...all those things really make that game a heavy experience especially WHEN it´s bloody or shocking..

You HAVE to try it out, just trust me and do it,you´ll never be the same again after Silent Hill, seriously.
Part two and three STILL frighten the hell out of me although I´ve finished each one over ten times and know them through and through...it is the kind of stuff that makes you keep every light on in the house, and more...

So if you LIKE horror,LOVE H.P.,then you´ll WORSHIP Silent Hill...believe me.

Lol, I guess its easy to say you REALLY loved the games. I must honestly say I'm not a big fan of horror games ('tho I did played "Dark corners of the Earth" which is based on Lovecraft's Innsmouth). I'm more of an adventure type of guy, solving puzzles and mysteries but there was a time in my life when I did enjoyed a thrill or two and I still enjoy a dark mood in a game. I'll take it on your word since you seem to be a veteran of the games and the truth be told, I have no reason not to believe you since I heard only good things about the game series from my friends who played it. I can't promise I'll play it anytime soon but if the chance arises, I'll keep in mind all your high praises and take it into consideration to put my frail psyche in the path of some virtual abuse. If one day I'll cease to update this gallery, its your fault and it means I'm in some asylum, scratching weird glyphs on the walls with my own blood.

Oh.
Forgot to mention that the the games have TWO difficulties to choose:
One for the action, and one for the riddles/puzzles(in SH1,2&3;4 doesn´t have that feature but is sick anyway and 5 I don´t know, got no PS3).
In easy mode the puzzles are challenging,in medium you REEEAAALLY gotta work on them, think around corners, and in hard mode...nobody can solve them who´s sane.I tried it once in SH3,there´s a Shakespeare-based puzzle to get a door code together..after I checked the web for the solution I deleted that game slot and gave up the idea of finishing SH 2 or 3 in hard riddle mode..not possible.

Dude, you like solving mysteries? That´s what the Silent Hill gameplay IS ALL ABOUT!

The enemies and the fighting is really just decoration. And to keep you nervous as hell(you have a radio that starts white noise when an enemy´s around and that gets louder, the closer the enemy gets...oh my god I got goosebumps just by talking about it it´s SICK).

No really,in Silent HIll,even the story is a mystery to solve. You can finish the game without knowing what´s goin on.The puzzles in the games are mostly based on strange clues you find to,for instance, find out a door code...my gosh I start to remember more of those SICK puzzles..I couldn´t even solve all of them in EASY riddle mode without a walkthrough...

Seriously Mates you gotta get those games, you´ll ADORE them,I know it!!!

Only the 4th part unfortunately.Although I was wrong,SH4 has riddle difficulties,too..hey,so I really convinced you?

Or did I just get carried away too much?

MatesLaurentiu In reply to TheSangson [2012-02-22 17:17:13 +0000 UTC]

Lol, no. Silent hill always carried to me as some freaky stuff even if I didn't played the game. I've seen enough art, screen shots and the movie helped a little even if you don't seem to approve with it. So consider me convinced. All I need now is time to game and to find somebody with a PS2.

TheSangson In reply to MatesLaurentiu [2012-02-22 17:24:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, the movie´s got its qualities,too...but for one who´s played the games it´s just not enough.
Hey by the way I downloaded your brush set some days ago, tested it now and I must say it´s even better than the one published by `adonihs ..great work!
It´s really gonna help me go digital by that "new-tool-effect" I also observed whenever getting a new tool for traditional stuff.Like when I first laid hands on a kneading eraser, for example..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatesLaurentiu In reply to TheSangson [2012-02-22 17:54:10 +0000 UTC]

I don't compare my brushes with anyone else, each artist tends to customize his/her own tools after a while and each tries to find the best approach to his work. Adonihs is a talented artist and his tools match his work. While my brushes won't fit his way of work or his tools my way of doing things, this doesn't take away the fact that he has his own style and its good at it. In the end tools are just tools, a good artist can do great things with a piece of burned wood (as it has been proves throughout art history). But I know the feeling you are talking about, the feeling of using a new method or a new tool to do things. You keep at it. One day you'll surely start making your own tools to fit the style of your work.

Hm...I don´t know..I´d rather have a collection of brushes I already have to fit my style..I downloaded so much brush sets now,I don´t believe I´ll have to make my own.Although I got [yours AND adonihs`]brushes loaded I use most at the moment and of course already begin to alter them a bit..

MatesLaurentiu In reply to TheSangson [2012-02-24 20:54:17 +0000 UTC]

I had the same. But in time I noticed I was using only a small percent of them and most of them were only there to slow my computer and that a lot of time, I couldn't find the good brush for what I needed to do. So I started shifting through them and delete the ones I never used. It might come one day that you will start doing the same.

TheSangson In reply to MatesLaurentiu [2012-02-25 05:57:38 +0000 UTC]

Guess so,but yours and adonihs sets I already chose BECAUSE there weren´t so many brushes in it..first I considered ANY special brushes cheating, did all just with default brushes only work with pressure sensitivity and brush size. And still,I think I wanna use as little brushes I can and I don´t think I even need many of them...but they can save a little time, that´s what wanna use them for, mostly.

You're gonna really appreciate them when you will have a tight deadline. Doing grass and foliage for example is tedious work. When I work in pencil, I have no choice but to render the foliage and grass one leaf and one blade of grass at a time. But here, since I have a choice, I take it.

Say,would it be ok if I upgrade you to a "friend" in my watchlist? You helped me really much and it´s long time since I last talked this much to someone here on dA and stuff,I think I really like you!

Vegeta: loving it!. XD

I like that obsene amount of detail... is still strange for me to apreciate the crossed lines shading in the column (for example)... i did not see anybody to do that except for you... I noticed that makes an interesting texture... but I'm still not sure... Anyway keep the good work. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatesLaurentiu In reply to sannamy [2012-02-09 15:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Its not my invention, those cross lines I mean. I remember seeing them as a child somewhere, very possible in a comics, and they stuck with me because they make things look like worked stone. They give the sensation that the surface has been chiseled and at the same time they give the sensation of hard surface. So I use them as a texture for flat surfaces mainly.

Exaclty what i thought... In my case i do saw a dot technique for stone work tectures... maybe u should try to use both... and see what hapens... is not a bad idea to add more techniques and materials to the workshop. ^^

MatesLaurentiu In reply to sannamy [2012-02-09 15:50:32 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I do use the dot technique on the statue behind the guy if you look closely. As I said, the cross hatch technique is just for flat surfaces, like walls or concrete square columns and alike.
